New Wave / Punk forebears...

I came across these guys the other day, and they are referred to as "punk". I beg to differ, at least with their most recent album. It sounds very Wire/Depeche Mode/Joy Division to me.

Def Joy Division influence there, right from that bass riff. I've browsed so much music on youtube recent I'm in need of a break before I get burned out LOL. I love the fact that there are so many modern bands doing this stuff, I need to see if I can find some local shows to check out.

Their earlier stuff definitely seems punkier, so it seems like their latest album is somewhat of an evolution for them. Overall, I dig it though.

Looks like they do Washington DC on March 11, seems to be the closest show on their current tour to you.

The entire Post-Punk genre really brought bass to the forefront of music, and is my biggest influence as far as playing is concerned.

For me I would add

Paul Gardiner - Tubeway Army/Gary Numan
Barry Adamson - (personally, mostly for his work in Magazine)
Mick Conroy - Modern English
Paul Webb - Talk Talk
Simon Gallup - The Cure
David Weddell - Josef K

Also, before all these guys (and a big influence on the genre) Holger Czukay of CAN.
Barry!

Since this thread has wobbled off(pun intended)to current bands playing in the old school style, I must give a shout out to some friends in my home town, Emmaline Twist...

A gumbo of 90's shoe gaze, 4AD, Joy Division, a little Stereolab, early Cure and so on, the instrumentation is guitar, baritone guitar, bass, and drums.

Then there's this Sioux meets Xmal Deutschland outfit, making a big noise out of Europe...
