New Wave / Punk forebears...

I love Gary “Mani” Moufield’s playing on the 1989 Stone Roses debut. Such great simple hooks. I can only imagine what it must be like to play bass with Reni. One of my favorite rock drummers of all time.

Also I wouldn't put them in the category as the OP, they are well after, and part of the Madchester music scene (Inspiral Carpets, Primal Scream, etc. IIRC) which is great in itself...

I've mentioned Paul Gardiner (Gary Numan/Tubeway Army) before in other threads, but he needs a mention here also, IMHO.

...and from the same gig with the inimitable "Nash The Slash" on electric violin...

I got into Gary Numan/Tubeway Army only recently and am loving it. Aside from "Cars" I didn't get much exposure to his stuff growing up, but it's so good, especially for the dark sci fi nerdiness.

I don't know where this thread is at, but I have to mention the late Brian Hooper from the Beasts of Bourbon and Rowland S.Howard's solo albums and Martin P. Casey of the Triffids and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Matt Gentlin of Archers of Loaf needs to be mentioned, although it's more alternative rock or something. He plays in the Band of Horses nowadays, funnily enough.
And then there is Rob Wright of Nomeansno. Absolute beast on bass.

Yes, same here; I had at first wanted to read it all, but 20+ pages is simply too many. However I did see Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds mentioned somewhere in the first seven or so pages (unless that was the 'Favorite New Wave Bassist' thread). :)

I want to underline Martyn P. Casey's playing with the Triffids more than his playing with Nick Cave. The Triffids' Hell of a Summer? Come on, that bassline is insanely good!

Did not see these fine bassists mentioned (maybe their bands...it is 26 pages):

Kim Gordon – Sonic Youth
Kim Deal – Pixies, The Breeders, The Amps
Laura Ballance – Superchunk
Gail Ann Dorsey – David Bowie, Gang of Four etc
D'arcy Wretzky – Smashing Pumpkins
Melissa Auf der Maur – Hole, Smashing Pumpkins

and in case it is a boys only club:

Greg Norton – Hüsker Dü
Michael Gerald – Killdozer
Kevin Strickland – Laughing Hyenas

Ian Rilen is a seriously undersung hero of Australian bass-at-the-forefront music. He played in a few prog and hard rock bands in the 70s (Rose Tattoo being the most notable) but then formed a group called X in the late 70s (no relation to the American band). They're a proto-hardcore punk band (they're contemporaries of Black Flag and put out their first album in '79) but the music is minimalist and bass-driven and takes on an almost postpunk texture, especially on their later albums.

Peter Hook....very original playing...pkus is the brain behind new order
Tina Weymoth....common...shes a killer
Sting....he is a freakin aweskme all around musician.
Ran into Sting twice in the last year at two different hotels. One in Rhode Island and then Jacksonville Florida. Both times he was aweskme! In a freakish kinda way.

I'd like to add the following to the list...

Kim Deal - Pixies (arguably my favourite bassist. I think I play like her the most... She's been mentioned already, but I LOVE KIM DEAL, SO...)
Paul Gray - The Damned (Strawberries is my favourite Damned record and Paul Gray is just SO solid...)
Patricia Morrison - Gun Club/Sisters of Mercy (The bass line to Lucretia My Reflection is gothic thunder...)
Alexander Hacke - Einstürzende Neubauten (His tone = gigantic...)
Reid Diamond - Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet (my all-time FAVOURITE Canadian Band, and my Holy Grail of bass tones!)
