New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

I absolutely love the Darkglass simulation and if you put a little effort into it you can get a hell of a great sound out of it! The Darkglass simulation is easily one of the reasons I am so happy with my B3n.

Not really used the dark glass too much, had a little play when I first got the device. Had a good play around with both the darkglass and Mxr DI. Las few days, Both excellent, different enough but similar, have them both on custom patches side by side. Had then both all set at 12 0 clock flat, and both a 50% blend and been switching from both, Mxr not got the rounder fuller tone as darkglass, but has more grindier gain and higher gain generally.
The Mxr is very underrated, based on these sims, at like half the price of the darkglass for the real units, they are a great alternative.

Here you go. Keep in mind that I like a bit of swelling with my comp setting. Almost a fretless “mwah” effect if you will.
 
Was reading that they added a HPF for the Zoom B3n but you can't get the download if your Mac Runs on OS 10 Sierra - that blows
Yep..unfortnately it doesnt quite work with High Sierra yet. This is the bane of the Mac user. A new version of the OS is released and almost everything works perfectly...except that one application that you really need to make your life better.
 
Well I was able to download some new stuff with the Guitar Lab Software -

The HPF just made this the only thing on my board - the Acoustic Amp sounds amazing

I copied the Guitar Lab Mac version and just worked on my mac - go figure

I took time to fully explore my B3n with the book, and discovered several things i didn't really used until today. One of them is the master level. :D
And here is my question: i already have raised levels of my different patches with effect volumes and patch levels.
And now i realize that the master level is around 32 / 100 ..
In your opinion; would it be better to raise the master level 90 to 100 and adapt my patches level after ? Or let it as it is: master level at 32, and my patches around 100 ? What would be the difference ?
What do you do with yours ?

The reason I use the following method is to make sure that, if an emergency happens where I need to physically bypass the B3n (take it out of the signal chain), there isn't a crazy fluctuation in level that needs to be adjusted. Also, if using the pedal with a traditional bass amp, it helps the bass amp's input "see" a similar output level as it otherwise would if plugging directly from the bass alone. Adding too much gain from a pedal, even if the tones are all very clean within the pedal, can seriously overdrive the input of a preamp unless it has sufficient input padding (not always the case).

Here's what I do:

1) determine the output of my bass going directly (no effects or anything else in line) into the input of the speaker system you use (I prefer a full range speaker system based on PA cabinets). (A simple way to get in the ballpark is to set up a mic aimed at the speaker system and plugged into a DAW, and then see where the levels register at the input of the DAW.)

2) plug the bass into the B3n, and put it in tuner BYPASS mode, so that only the dry signal is passing through the pedal. Then try your best to match the output level of the tuner-bypass signal with that of the direct bass (in part #1 above).

3) when creating patches, for every effect, amp, cab, processor you add to the virtual signal chain in the B3n, compare the output level of each effect with that of the tuner-bypass level. When using amps and drives, it is very easy to tend to add level. If you are setting an amp/cab model in the B3n for "nominal" (typical) output level, then the amp/cab sims should be set as to NOT boost the overall output much, if at all. If you do want a boost to the signal, use the amp model' BOOST switch setting for this purpose, or otherwise put a drive stomp/boost effect in the chain that has the specific purpose of BOOSTing the level.

Otherwise, with an amp/cab sim and other standard effects engaged, there shouldn't be huge fluctuations in overall output level, again, unless a boost from an effect is specifically desired. This can also be a little tricky since not all effects have a dedicated Level parameter.

When using amp/cab modeling, it is a general rule of thumb to make it a workflow habit of ALWAYS checking each effect and combination of effects (and amp/cab sims, etc.) in relation to dry bypass through the unit. This holds whether you're using an inexpensive Zoom pedal, or something that costs $2000.

I have mine set about 70 -75, got this through trial and era and found it works best for me, only had the unit about 2 months but most of the amp and effects settings are about 40-60% volume, this gives me enough balance and can use master volume on amp or bass volume for minor adjustments, pretty much got everything pretty close to same volume with zoom on, bypassed, not in chain at all.

There has been something on the periphery of my actual thought process for a while now. Here goes:
There has to be something one can place on the strings above the pickup that will emit a steady test tone in order to set levels by way of a DAW or anything with a real meter in it.
First thought is tiny speaker being fed tone from an audio signal generator. I will try my phone with a signal generator app in a bit.
I'm sure you all can come up with a device to do this and allow us to set very precise levels.

Also someone had this brilliant idea a while back and it applies not only for setting levels but also tweaking sounds. Place a looper in front of the effect which you are modifying so that you have a constant, consistent source without the distraction of playing. (Also frees up the hands and brain)

To my knowledge, the AxeFxII has a feature for balancing output levels in the form of a weighted/compensated metering, and especially handy for matching levels between clean and dirty (rhythm) tones. I'm not sure exactly what type of weighted meter they use...it's buried somewhere in the owner's manual, and IIRC there are online videos of the meter leveling process on youtube. I've had good luck using a DAW, though, and recording each step of the process as a guide.
 
Hello all! My B3n has arrived! Only had time to test the patches and some are vey good, others are a little repetitive and others are useless.

I noticed that if I want to use the drums or the looper, I have to insert that as an effect on a patch?? That's a little ridiculous, no? Why is it build this way?!

So, if I understand correctly, I have to make a patch specifically to use this 2 functions? What if I want to use another patch? Or change patches in the middle of a practice?

Hey all, I've been reading through this lengthy thread, it's been very helpful as I piece together a small pedal board based around the B3n.

There has been a lot of discussion around power isolation and unwanted noise, and it's been pretty well confirmed that if you use a bargain, non-Zoom power supply with the B3n, it will introduce an undesirable screeching noise. Has anyone confirmed whether or not the Zoom B3n will work fine (i.e., with no unwanted screeching) if it's powered by a higher-quality, truly isolated power supply, such as the 1-Spot Pro CS7?

Short Answer: The B3n works perfectly with the legitimately isolated CS7 (that I own, great product.)

Long Answer: The actual underlying issue is that the B3n requires its own 9V power tap with no other devices sharing that same tap. The quality or pedigree of the wall wart is not really a factor. Power supplies like the CS7 are not wall warts, but not all such power supplies have isolated taps.
