Newbie seeks advice...

Hi all,
I'm managing a great young alt-country band, and since we gotta go electric in the studio, I sold our lovely Thunderchief (alas) and am buying an electric instrument for our bass player.

Of course, we've got next to no $, and have to buy online, without hearing them, but I've found a member on another bass board who's selling a Fender MIM Mike Dirnst (which is based on the 51 reissue with a nonsingle pickup, I think) for $425 with gig bag, or for $525 a (very early) American Fender Jazz Highway 1 (numeral, not spelled out; I've heard it makes a diff?), with pickups upgraded to Fender CS 60's and with a hsc. Both are mint.

Any ideas on what the diff in sound these two have, and which is the better deal? We're looking for a clean, punchy sound but lots of bottom, too...

Thanks for any advice you may offer; I truly appreciate it!
