Newbie to bass (and apparently discussion forums) question :

i've moved this here. in the future please :
a) post in correct forums. that's why they are there - you'll get more valid answers when you ask your questions in the forums designed to accomodate them.
b) try the search function. it's right here...

I used the smallest Berringer (about $140 or so) for a few months while waiting for stuff to arrive from Hong Kong. It was fine for practice or playing with accoustic instruments. It couldn't handle a good active bass but did OK with passive 5-string ones. About 40 lbs (ads say less but it's about 40lbs!) Tilt back was nice. When I used it in a gym it had to be miked.
Gallien Krueger MB 15 New on Musicians friend for $399.00. Excellent for practice it has an MP3 player input built in for practice and is loud enough for small to medium venue gigs and a low z output to go into a mixing console for larger venues. Hey though if you are playing large venue then spend more money. For a starter combo though you can't beat the GK. It will give the beginner or pro all they need for practice.
