Newbie to six-strings. . .help?

Hello all,

A question for those who know about six-string basses. I play in a progressive death metal band whose influences include Necrophagist, Behold the Arctopus and Dream Theater. Many sections in our songs require me to play slap style, as well as the standard fingerpicking technique. I know it's not much, but I've only got about $500 to spend. Any suggestions for me?

Hi Josh,

For $500.00, be on the lookout for a used Ibanez BTB or SR series six string. Those will be wide enough for you to slap on. I could also recommend the Spector Legend 6 (again, used), but the neck is huge on that one. I think Carvin 6'ers show up used for around $500.00, but I recall the string spacing being a bit tight.

You could also check rondomusic.net for some NEW 6'ers for less than 5 bills, but I can't tell you anything about them.

6-string bass on rock gigs. I know bands what would throw you off the stage for not playing a 4-string for rock.

First $500 you have find something used a new 6-string, any new 6-string at that price is going to be crap. I mainly buy used instruments one the price and second they have been played in most issues have been worked out by previous owner. Getting ripped off can happen anywhere not exclusive to stores or internet, or new versus used gear.

I've owned and gigged with a Peavey Fury 6, and Brice HXB-406. Both performed their duties well, and I have no large qualms with their sound nor playability.
I also use them in a progressive metal band, and have sometimes had a trouble cutting through with either of them (A decent amp can remedy that though), so you may want to consider spending some extra cash on a pre-amp upgrade, although it is not mandatory.

I've owned a couple of SR406 models - exceptional bang for the buck and they can be had for about $300 used. Got a minty black one right now that has KA pickups and is waiting for a u-retro deluxe install this weekend. Paid more for the preamp than I did for the bass :)

I have learned the stock Ibanez pickups are pretty okay - it's the preamp that could use improving.

EDIT: The Axcelerator 6 is sold. But if another should show up here or elsewhere........

I just bought one of these basses used here on TB and I'll certainly advocate. NOTHING sort of a TL-6 is going to touch that Peavey Axcelerator 6 string for under $500, used or new. The bridge alone sells for $200. The thing has the same pickups, EQ, and hardware as the early Cirrus basses, and the construction is just as good, though bolt-on instead of neck-through. Some of us actually prefer bolt-on, there's even a neck tilt adjustment.
