Newer video games

I will admit to liking some of the newer games. I'm a big HALO/HALO 2 fan, and will probably shell out for a 360 when HALO 3 comes out. But other than that, there are only a few games that I really like. Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2 were okay, but I rented instead of buying. Same with Black Hawk down (total waste) and Gun. For computers, I like the Sim style of games, Sim City 4, Civilization 3 and 4, Age of Empires, Command and Conquer, etc etc etc.

I only have a couple of shooter games on my computer, notably Descent 3, TIE fighter, and Rouge Spear.

Oh, and I almost forgot the Myst series!! Riven made my head hurt for months, and I STILL haven't figured out Exile (I refuse to cheat.) Those games have the added benefit of really torquing your brain.

Goldeneye was HUGE - everybody I know pretty much played that game all the time, and that's only barely an exaggeration. It was the first wildly popular 3D shooter. I would like to buy an N64 if for no other reason than to play Mario 64, too. That's a great game! Also, N64 gave us Mario Party, which is more fun than you can shake a stick at.

I agree with you on GoldenEye...but certainly not Mario64, that was dire. Yet another example of a game sold entirely on the basis of its graphics.

I've already voiced my opinion, but I'll have to admit that Ninja Gaiden for XBox is amazing (it deserves to be put in bold). I've only played it a few times, but I'd consider getting an Xbox for that game alone. And the newer Zelda games (that starts off at Zelda 64) are also some of the few newer games I find good. Well, they're great, but it drops off kinda fast after that.

Actually I've been spending days trying to recover data from my hard drive.

I'm up for Tecmo smack talk more than old school video game chat. But in addition to Tecmo, I am dominant in a number of classic video games. Back when a quarter would let a skilled player dominate for hours, and controllers only had a few buttons and 1 control pad/joystick. These new fangled games require ADHD and 15 fingers to operate.

For old school thrills, I have the real things: a dead-mint Asteroids upright quarter-muncher, as well as a 4-player Warlords cocktail table arcade. I have pinball as well, and used to have (the trifecta) MsPacMan, Galaga and Robotron machines, which went by the wayside when I moved but I'd love to have them back if I can make space.

As for consoles - I still play everything from the Atari 2600 to the GameCube; my favorite Cube games are SSX Tricky, Soul Calibur 2 and the new Prince of Persia series (finished the first one in 8 days, the second I didn't like enough to bother, and the third I finished in a couple weeks as I had less time to play). And for a party? Super Monkey Ball 2.

YAY Jive made it! This thread wasn't the same without you. Now quit talking about video games and get my DJ5!! :D

Ahh yeah. I love me some Ms. Pacman, the fast version. I could play for hours on one or two quarters. I put that game on my MAME console, but it just wasn't the same. I miss the guys coming in and stacking their quarters on the lip across the top, only to take them back after they realized I wasn't going to be losing anytime soon. Defender and Asteroids were classics I could play for hours on less than a dollar as well.

The quarters on the lip bring back some memories. You don't see that in the arcade anymore, because of regardless how good you are your game will end prematurely and you will need to throw in more quarters/tokens. Now it is he who has the most tokens who will destroy the boss and win the game, not the most skilled.

Ms Pacman is great for lots of fun. I got to play last year (for friggin 50 cents!). Just like riding a bike, I got into the swing of things after a game, and as always I had to leave before I was actually done with the game.

Asteroids, I could play for hours, but I always got impatient and had to goof anround with the thrusters to make things more fun. Defender had too many buttons for me.

Jive, i'll have to remember to invite you over once I get the bar/cade finished, if i ever do before i have to move again. (job moving to Reston in July, commuting from Alexandria may be out of the question...)

I've pretty much given up on video games because I just don't have that much free time anymore with going to school 7 hours a day and working 4-6 hours a day as well. I need to practice in the 1-2 hours of free time I have on weekdays. I also figured it was time for me to grow up and video games just weren't as fun to me anymore (especially console games). I haven't owned a console since the PS1.

The only game I still own and enjoy on my computer is Master of Orion II. A great game but the AI is too stupid. I love real-time-strategy and turn-based-strategy games and it seems these mostly only come out on the PC. There is one game coming out that looks so good I'm actually going to cave in and buy and a decent 3D card so I can play it. It's called Galactic Civilizations II. If you enjoyed the MOO series you should love it.

i currently play world of warcraft, counterstirke, unreal tournament 2004, halo 2, and several other games. they are all "newer" games.... but i still like the "older" games a lot.
SNES was probley one of the best systems ever. So many great games. So for me, i like both generations of games.
as for some newer games being pieces of crap, i would say that that is true. there are some games that come out now that just suck. The old ones are original and classic. the video game industry is trying to create "the next great thing" and fail badly most of the time....

I used to love real time strategy games, but they are what led me to remove all video games from my house.

As much as I love video games, they are like crack to me. I have what I call the "John Henry Syndrome", which is a disease afflicing those who can't lose to a machine. I can't stand losing to the computer, and I'll do whatever I can to figure it out and defeat it.

Anyway, when I first got Command & Conquer I played the game until 10AM every morning, and then woke up sometime in the afternoon and grabbed a cigarette and cup of coffee and was back at it until I won (for both NOD and GDI). I wasted an entire spring break in college on that game. My dog was disappointed we never took that camping trip in the beautiful Colorado mountains.

Then came Red Alert, and the same thing happened. Starcraft, same thing. Afterwards I felt strung out, just like I did during undergrad after a nights of partying. Except it wasn't drugs, it was video games. So after that I removed all the games from my hard-drive.

I might put a game on my PC at work, since sometimes I run data loads that take a long time. But never at home. Right now, I don't even have solitaire on my system. Right now video gaming consists of playing NBA 2K2 at one of my co-worker's homes after work once in a while.

Ok, who used to play Wastelands on comadore? Who played the leisure suit larry series, space quest, or police quest games back in the day?

I think those games consitute the most fun video games I ever played. I play EQ now, and GTA, but GTA is the only game I own for my PS2, and is the reason I bought the damn thing in the first place. I know they have it for PC, but there is just something about playing it on my 65" TV :)
