I actually meant Rosewood necks but the point's made.You didn't say what kind of music you play but having a bass with flat wounds would also be a good excuse for two maples with different strings. Another interesting variation.

Take a look at the Yamaha BBP34, it costs close to the same as an Am Performer but is built with the quality of the EBMM.

It’s nice to say to buy what plays best but some of the best basses I have played I ordered on spec because they were not regular stock. Just make sure there is a decent return policy if you do order on spec.

The BBP is a beautifully made instrument. A real bargain, considering the quality of construction.

The Fender Performer P/J is a great one. At least the 2 that I've noodled on were.
I almost purchased a Performer Series Jazz before I snagged my Player Series Jazz. The Performer was definitely a nicer feeling/sounding instrument, IMO, but the Player Series was hitting way above its price range to my ears and hands, too. Went with the Player, but if cash weren't a factor, I would've gotten the Performer, for sure.

I'd second the Yamaha BB Series basses, too. Great sounds and values, comfy, and around your price range.

Hi, this is my first post here, so thank you that I have oportunity to be here. I have a beautiful Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 5 with maple neck and fingerboard. I would like to have another bass with 4 string and PJ combination of pickups. I really like Fender American performer P bass, but I can't really decide between 3tone sunburst with RW fingerboard and placid blue maple neck and fingerboard. What do you think? Or do you have any other bass in mind in this price range?

About 20 years ago Fender made an American built PJ. I own one, and it is one heck of a bass with a great voice. I’ve not seen too many of these for sale, but if you see one, it’s a much higher quality instrument than the Player series.

Are you talking about the Fender JP-90?
I had one, and will say it's a great bass but wasn't too crazy about the pickguard on it.

Mine is a Precision with a Jazz bridge pickup, with 2 volume, and one tone control. Not sure what the model number is. Looking up the serial number, it’s called a Precision.

As for the pick guard, it’s everybody’s favorite, a tort!!

The JP-90 was a MIA bass with a jazz body and neck that wasn't around for long - it also had this really weirdly shaped pickguard and unfortunately, not a tort one at that. lol

I found the strings too high so I tried to adjust the truss rod but I can't see or feel any change. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

What I do is to also lower the bridge saddles. Watch the video starting at 1:20.
