I had a MF 15% coupon burning a hole in my in-box and had a hole in my percussion collection, so I splurged on a new güiro as well as a flex-a-tone, which I've always wanted. And of course, when I get a new instrument I frequently want to record it, so I banged out a song that was bouncing around my brain.
The güiro is a humble instrument, a gourd with grooves cut into it and scraped with a stick, but it is central to Afro-Caribbean rhythms, particularly in Cuba and Puerto Rico. (Güiros made from actual gourds are still around, but they are fragile. Most salseros use the virtually indestructible resin ones from LP these days.)
Pics or it didn't happen:
And the recording, featuring both new instruments (and some prominent bass, of course):
Enjoy the ride!
