Alright, alright. I'm done waiting. Let's do this. Three Seattle Thunderbirds were drafted today. Right wing Henrik Rybinski (Florida), goalie Roddy Ross (Philadelphia), and center Matthew Wedman (Florida). -Mike
Mike, have you seen Roddy Ross play? If so, what do you think? I'm not sure why the Flyers passed on Cole Caufield and selected a defenseman (Cam York) with their first pick. Caufield is small in stature, but a pure goal scorer, which the Flyers could always use...
I sure have, many times. He's solid, but if you get to him early, he has a hard time recovering. If not, he'll stand tall and can carry a team. Great puck handling skills too. -Mike
Other than the first couple of picks, I hadn't heard much about any of the rest of them, so I learned a lot just watching the 1st round. The Pens actually had a first-round pick this year, their first since 2014, IIRC. Oh well, I'd trade draft picks for a couple of Stanley Cups any day of the week but it eventually that catches up to you, as it seems to have with GM JR. Felt bad for Caufield as he was passed over numerous time, but frankly, I feel Montreal is a good fit for him. (Kept reminding me of the Brady Quinn fiasco at the NFL draft back then) I really felt bad for Arthur Kaliyev, as they kept focusing in on him too as he was being passed over, later in the round. Unfortunately for him, he also happened to be nervously chewing his fingernails and sniffing his fingers, and possibly even a discreet nose-pick while on camera. Poor kid...I can only imagine the nerves/anxiety these kids have but still, he really should be more aware there are cameras around, and likely pointed at you.
I figured Subban would wear out his welcome in Nashville sooner or later, and now he's a Devil. He really does seem to be a good guy, very philanthropic in the community, etc, but his actions do rub some people the wrong way. Still sucks for us Pens fans now that we gotta face him six times a year now instead of two. Thought there would have been more trades, but other than Subban, Marleau, and JT Miller, no one else changed addresses.
After two Stanley Cup championships and 15 years in the NHL, Brooks Orpik retired today. I remember him well as a Pen. I missed his toughness when he bolted for the Caps. -Mike
The Red Wings, under new GM Steve Yzerman, drafted a big young German defenseman that I’ve never heard of. While Germany is not known for producing great hockey players, I trust Stevie Y’s hockey sense.
Regarding German D-men Seidenberg was very good with the Bruins. Not much excitement about the B's draft, but to be fair they were picking pretty late.
In for the offseason. Even though a top draft pick could walk into my house right now and I would not have a clue who he was.

After 19 seasons, and no Stanley Cup championships, Roberto Luongo has retired. I still remember the finals against Boston when he played for Vancouver. -Mike
Last year was his worst statistically, but the Cats defense was not much help either. You're right, he will be missed. He had three years left on that albatross of a contract with an AAV of $5.33M. Despite it being frontloaded, he still left about $3.3M on the table by retiring. I guess enough is enough for some folks.
Avs acquired Jacob MacDonald from the Cats. Looks like Colorado has figured out the aging blue line is a liability and it needs to be ready for more speed And I spelled Burakovsky wrong. Also auto correct hates me Carry on
