NHL Offseason 2019

Let's not forget we now have Brandon Tanev for the next... SIX YEARS!?! Another Jack Johnson-like long-term deal? The AAV is only #3.5M but still, six years? GM JR is setting things up that his successor will have difficulty with in the future.

Part of me wonders if he knows his days are numbered, which would explain the careless deals the last couple years.
The Pens SCF window will close, Rutherford will be let go, he'll skip off down the road and the next GM will be left with the cupboards bare and a salary cap mess that could take time to clean up.

Hey you glad to dump Kadri off?

Eh?
Always liked Kadri, sorry to see him go. But cap space, and the fact he can only be the third line centre here (and he should be at least a second line centre) means something had to give. Think a good trade for both teams, Leafs needed a right handed D-man. I hope Nazim has a real good year in Denver.

Trade has not been without some negative chatter here in Colorado. Kerfoot and Barrie were popular players (and look good in blue BTW)

Kadri will have to avoid the issues that have hung over his head. Maybe not being in the Toronto spotlight will do him good

I still think he’s a goon

If the Pens end up trading away Bryan Rust or Hornqvist to clear salary cap room, that should also be the day Rutherford is fired.

Hey, then he can sign Dion Phaneuf to a six-year deal!

Actually I like Dion and would like to see him in the 'burgh, but not for what he thinks he's worth. Just playing GM here...He's at best a 3-4 Dman with above average skills, but I wouldn't go over $4M/yr for 2 yrs max. But do the Pens really need him? Answer: no.

Dion is a good defenseman who was put in an awful position by Burke here. The buildup and expectations were impossible for him (or maybe anyone not named Larry Robinson or Bobby Orr) to meet. T.O. fans can be awfully hard on good players, just remember what happened with Larry Murphy.

Man, there is a gaping divide in opinion on Tanev's contract between Pens fans and local media here in the burgh. Fans hate both the length and cap hit but media guys are saying thats the price you gotta pay to get younger & faster. JR is even catching hell for Hornqvist's contract despite him being a fan favorite. Ironically, Horny is the guy who Tanev is compared to most frequently. Supposedly he wont score many goals but is good for hitting and being a pest in front of the goal, and puck possesion. Also around 8-10 teams were after Tanev which drove his price up.

That's fine if you want to get younger, but Tanev is an average player at best. Why commit six years and that kind of money to a bottom six guy who, while he's not old, has some NHL miles piled up already?
For me, it's not Tanev that's frustrating, it's the contract. This is the second year in a row Rutherford made a bad signing. So yeah, I don't think he cares anymore. He just gets a kick out of making deals, no matter what they are.

I watched a fair amount of Jets games last season, and yes, you do notice Tanev when he's on the ice. But it's because he's an energy guy (like you alluded to, @grrg63 , similar to Hornqvist), not because of any outstanding skill. Salary seems only slightly high, but the term is the headscratcher.

I'm mildly surprised Ryan Dzingel is still out there. Another hard working winger who can score (26g last season), and he's only 27.

I'm not thrilled to see Wayne Simmonds with the Devils. I'd prefer that he NOT be in the same Division with the Flyers. He was one of my favorite Flyers for many years, but I'm not so sure I'll like having to face him that many times in a season!!
Yep, that was the first thing I thought of (after bemoaning my Pens having to see him so often) was that he's gonna be a thorn in the Flyers' sides, too.
