NHL PLayoffs 2009

XYM, I'm with you on letting them play, my beef is that if Kuntz's blatant cross check which happened right in front of an official is a no call then most certainly Ericssons interference is.

Kunitz (though I do like your tactical respelling ;) ) should have been called period. Cross check to the head is dirty. Ericsson's and Franzen's calls were legit calls, but to call Ericsson on the Hal Gill special was weak imho. I think Adams embellished on the Franzen call, but the fouls were there. I've got more of a beef with the call on Ericsson, since Gill does it almost every shift.

Especially since they were about 45 seconds apart. It isn't like Ericssons interference broke up a three on one or something. And to give either team a man up in tied finals game in the third period it had better be blatant. I feel the same way about five on threes, it's the Stanley Cup finals. If as an official your going to give a team that kind of advantage, there better be a dang good reason.

Agreed. Still, it was 3 power plays for the Pens, 2 for Detroit. More even than I expected. I thought the Wings would be blown out tonight. Things look good for game 4, imho.

I did here an interesting stat last night. Evidently Ericsson is number two in Playoff scoring behind Lidstrom among defensemen. Of all the young guns, this kid has the most potential. He is big, fast, strong, and like most Wing defenseman he moves the puck well and he also has a great shot. I really think we could be hearing his name with Norris in a few years.

Didn't realize he was that high on the scoring sheets, I guess he has more assists than I realized. I agree, and I said this a while back. I'm impressed with him. And he was the LAST PICK in his draft year.

None of the highlights I watched mentioned anything about it (3 different channels), and I wasn't sure so I had to ask. All I know is the refs have been missing too many men calls all playoffs long...but damn, 21 seconds? :help:

No biggie, and considering the level of hockey IQ (or IQ in general) on most hockey boards I've seen, I don't blame you. Heck, even Edzo was screaming about it. I guess he didn't get his morning reacharound from Pierre Maguire since they were working for different broadcast teams yesterday. :rollno:

He's not. Lidstrom, Rafalski, Stuart and Kronwall have more points than he does (on the Wings), and he is 20th among NHL defensemen for points in the playoffs. He has 3 goals and 3 assists.

Burk, you sure they didn't say it was Lidstrom who was second behind Gonchar in playoff scoring among defensemen?

This is correct per the NHL stats page at NHL.com

As for the Kunitz cross-check: I hate the guy. He cross-checked Simeon Varlamov in the head near the end of game 2 against the Caps and didn't get called. Varlamov didn't play well after that cross check and I believe it rattled him. Two cross checks to players heads in the playoffs? How has this guy not been suspended yet?

I guess, I misunderstood the commentators on that one. Oh well.

Aussies like hockey???? Kewl!!!

Oh yeah, I played back home a bit when younger but all the ice rinks started closing down. I played inline instead for a while as that was a lot easier. I think that may be disappearing though as well :scowl:

If more people could get access to ice hockey back home I'm sure more people would get into it (I can't remember the last time I saw an NHL match in Aus).

Malthumb, cheers for the update. I assume next game is in Pittsburgh?

Game day!!! I always get so nervous on game days. It's probably a good thing I am not a professional athlete. If I'm this nervous and I don't even play, who knows what kind of mess I would be if I was playing. :D

Hey, Terry Sawchuck, one of the greatest goalies ever, puked before every game he played, so don't feel bad.

Yes, I am stoked we are up 4-2 after two. But this is not the Detroit team I know. Someone kidnapped them in the locker room after the first and sent the Canes out there to play the second period. :D

Osgood looks confused, turnovers in their own zone, bad passes, no forechecking, little to no energy.....this is not the Detroit Red Wings.

The refs are keeping it fair and square. We got nailed for legit back to back penalties, but Detroit only got one SOG out of both. I haven't seen any obvious non-calls or weak calls in favor of either team. No six men on the ice for 21 seconds either. :D :D

I should probably wait until the offseason thread; but to veer off topic for a moment (It's my thread dammit)...I thought I'd ask what the deal is with Ray Emery. Looks like the Flyers may sign (speculation)...I heard about his displeasure in Ottawa, and there is a lot of negative remarks from Flyers fans on their Message boards and in the Facebook group. I was hoping you guys (Xym) could shed a little light on it for me.

I understand he is a good goalie;...but Philly fans are calling him a "Locker Room Cancer" and comparing him to TO. I also have a hard with fans calling his work ethic into question. How the heck do they know what his work ethic is? Whats not to say that a change in scenery and coaching staff might change his attitude.

Is that just how fans are...."know it alls" when they really know nothing. I'm always more curious to see how moves like this play out, rather than just jumping to conclusions. Honestly it doesn't matter who is in net when your "D can't or won't clear the porch".
