NHL PLayoffs 2009

Sorry if this has been posted before (did not read the whole thread)

I got to say I really could never watch hockey on tv. Loved going to games (only been to a few) but on my small tv's in the past it was just too hard to watch. Well I now have a 50" HD plasma and man the games look awesome on the big screen and in HD ! Watched the last game and really got into it. You can see so much more on a large screen. I really hope the newer larger tv's will help improve hockey's popularity, just need more people to give it a chance. It's just to bad my Cap's are gone :(

Welcome. HD is huge for hockey, since the widescreen allows you to see so much more of the play developing. Scroll back about 4 pages to catch up on the finals and jump into the discussion :) Most of the folks here are pretty knowledgeable and glad to help. Don't let my verbose posts scare you :D

Besides the 2 stars, where is this improved team everyone is talking about?

Did you watch last seasons Finals?

Let's see.....Scuderi and Orpik are playing better. Staal has improved his game as has Kennedy to name a few. Last season, we got shut out and shell shocked in the first two games. I thought the series was basically over emotionally for the Pens.

I realize scoring two goals in two games is no drastic improvement, but this year the Pens team has a different feel to it. I can tell by watching the games, but I also play real close attention to this team. I get the feeling you do not, but I could be wrong.

From what little I've seen...the Pens have actually shown up this series, Malkin especially.

Last year during the conference finals...I think the Flyer's gassed them. The Pens were able to take of them early and the Cane's proved to be little competition. The Pens have the experience of last year to draw on. That said the Wings are still a formidable team.

It's impossible to draw any conclusions with only games played. Wait to see how this plays out after the 1st two home games for each team has been played.

Well Congrats Pens fans you got your only victory of the series. :D

I will admit that like most of the games either team could have pulled it off. And you did get the game winner on a cheap penalty.:p Especially after the refs looked the other way on a cross check by Kunitz about a minute earlier right in front of the lineman. Either let them play or call everything. That being said the Pens played well enough to win so congrats.

Well..... We can agree to disagree?

Aj

I agree with the photo order

He definitely was vulnerable to that, but Dupuis didn't do that. The under the stick bit is pretty clear imho - if Hossa was coming from outside the stick, he'd have pushed Dupuis' stick into the puck, not away from it. The only possible body contact on the play was the hands, and I'm honestly not convinced by the photos. The ref had a better view than any of us do.

Nothing in the rules about "parallel to the ice thing". The only reason to call a hook in the situation is if it's body contact from the stick.

ESPN pointed out that when the penalty was called on Erricson the Pens had six men on the ice for 21 seconds with no call from the officials. I'm all for letting them play, but they might want to order calculators for the refs.:hmm:

do the same refs officiate each game when they get to this point? I know that whittle em down of the course of the entire PO's....just curious.

Some refs I respect...some I don't **cough**cough**Van Massenhoven**cough**.

Well, I finally found someone to dislike in this series........Chris Kunitz. He's been pulling that crap with those high cross checks ever since we picked him up, and it has increased in the playoffs peaking tonight with that cheap shot on a relatively clean player Franzen. I guess he thinks he is our enforcer. Crosby set him up a couple times tonight, and he failed miserably on both. :rollno:

I wouldn't say the interference on Ericsson was cheap, it was legit by definition. My gripe is it was inconsistent with how the rest of the series has been called. I don't think he left the refs with much of a choice to call it considering how it was right out there in the wide open with no one around but him and Cooke.

On to the game.....more coaching for my Pens.....keep shooting from the point!!! keep shooting from the point!!! We aren't getting anywhere trying to stuff it down Osgood's throat, so quit with that already. Keep firing away from the point, we'll get a few to go in. That seems to be the only weakness on Osgood right now.

I thought Detroit showed a major lack of killer instinct tonight. They had this game on more than one occasion. There were three to five minute stretches where we couldn't even get the puck out of the neutral zone, let alone clear it for something as simple as an icing call. The game was there for them to win, and I am surprised they didn't. You can't let a team like the Pens hang around in the series.

Did anyone else notice the better defense played by the Pens tonight? Particularly how they kept their sticks on the ice more often? I KNEW IT....Bylsma is reading this thread, or at least Yeo is. :D

Yes, that's the first thing I noticed about their playing tonight. They poke checked everything that came across their blue line and there wasn't hardly anything open for the Wings all night. Big props on Pittsburgh's D. It's what won them the game IMO. There weren't any crazy beautiful goals or break aways.

21 seconds with too many men on the ice? That's just atrocious! I can understand 5 seconds but 21? That's way too much time for a ref to not pay attention. It was at a critical time in the game too. Hockey refs are among the worst in any sport. I understand they have a hard job to do, but 21 seconds? Get your head out of your butt guys.

AJ - I'm fine with that :)

Game 3 - Kunitz shows his pedigree as a former Anaheim *uck with a very dirty hit on Franzen's head. Mike you shouldn't be surprised he's playing like that one bit :)

Scroll back to my series preview - I said Talbot was the secondary player who scared me the most. Tonight he showed why. Overall the Pens played MUCH better D with their sticks on the ice more to clog the passing lanes. I agree that that, coupled with having the last change, carried them. The Ericsson penalty was meh, but definitely much more callable then the alleged hook by Hossa, so I won't complain.

What IS a legit complaint is the Pens having 6 skaters in the offensive zone for 21 seconds while the goalie was still in the net. It's a horribly blown call. The only rationale I can see for not calling it was that if you consider Eaton the 6th man, he never touched the puck. However, his covering a point allowed the Pens to severely clog down low, and therefore he did affect the play. Kunitz should have been called for his Anaheim Special (TM) on Franzen. Overall, however, I still prefer the refs letting them play.

Detroit had good pressure at times, but I wouldn't necessarily say it was a lack of killer instinct as it was the Pens getting better matchups at home giving them the chance to get more sustained pressure.

Heroincredible - regarding your question about the Pens pulling their goalie causing the too many men for 21 seconds, this isn't a bandwagon noob discussion board like some other hockey boards I've been on (yes I was banned from one for posting the Kronwall hit capture because they insisted it was a head shot), the guys here wouldn't even mention it if it was pulled for an extra attacker since that wouldn't be an issue. :)

Yep, It was six men with the goalie. :hmm:

XYM, I'm with you on letting them play, my beef is that if Kuntz's blatant cross check which happened right in front of an official is a no call then most certainly Ericssons interference is. Especially since they were about 45 seconds apart. It isn't like Ericssons interference broke up a three on one or something. And to give either team a man up in tied finals game in the third period it had better be blatant. I feel the same way about five on threes, it's the Stanley Cup finals. If as an official your going to give a team that kind of advantage, there better be a dang good reason.

I did here an interesting stat last night. Evidently Ericsson is number two in Playoff scoring behind Lidstrom among defensemen. Of all the young guns, this kid has the most potential. He is big, fast, strong, and like most Wing defenseman he moves the puck well and he also has a great shot. I really think we could be hearing his name with Norris in a few years.

None of the highlights I watched mentioned anything about it (3 different channels), and I wasn't sure so I had to ask. All I know is the refs have been missing too many men calls all playoffs long...but damn, 21 seconds? :help:
