NIB solo

I'm in a Sabbath tribute band, Children of the Grave.

I like to put my own mark on the stuff as much as possible.

For NIB should I:

a) Try to copy the solo/intro exactly how geezer does it (or pretty much).

b) Do basically my own solo, but shove in a bit of geezers here and there.

c) Write my own solo.

d) Not bother with a solo at all (I'm not a would be Guitard).

Put it to you this way - the best tribute bands ARE the best by playing the stuff note for note. If you're trying to put your mark "as much as possible," then it's not a tribute, IMO.

Have to agree. If you were a "cover band" then it would be more acceptable for you to put your own touch on it, at least that's what I think. But if you're a tribute band, you're tributing Sabbath, not yourself, so it'd make more sense to do the same solo.

I thought of this because I thought of the Primus cover of NIB, where Les does his own solo. Les is his own person with his own act doing a "cover" of a song, adding his own touch to it. But if you're just a tribute band (which Primus is obviously not) then it makes more sense to just imitate note for note.

would that change things? whats the difference between a cover band and a tribute band? Were certainly not a 'tribute act'.

Our singer is a girl. She rocks.

So...can anyone answer my specific question on the solo at the start of NIB? I may just cut it altogether.

Play it note of note, people need to recodnize the tune, especially since the bass starts it off.

Ok, but live he usually cuts it back to bare bones, if he does it at all.

The tune starts with the opening riff, not the pre-solo.

With all due respect, "NIB" without the solo is like "Stairway to Heaven" without the solo, or Van Halen's "Jump" without the keyboard. Why would you wanna cut it out?

I think your probably right. After playing it again I quite like it. It's pretty easy and not as long as I thought (about 40secs).

I think I'll keep it in. I'm gonna take back the opening riff from the guitard too!

You can muck about too much sometimes. Thats the danger of knowing the stuff too well for so long. Its very tempting to indulge yourself. But the audience want the real thing (as much as possible).

I was in a band that was something like a Black Sabbath "homage" band. We didn't look like them and we didn't play note for note but we tried to recapture the sound of a vintage, live Black Sabbath concert.

We usually played it straight through with Behind the Wall of Sleep right into the bass solo and then into NIB. I played the solo making sure to get all the signature Geezer licks in but I usually modified it a bit to make it sound more like a "live" solo. Just pretend you're Geezer doing a live Black Sabbath show and that will put you in the right frame of mind to play.

Don't cut the NIB solo. It was always very popular with our audience.
