I generally like nice zingy rounds (Rotosounds) on my Jazz basses, but this slightly warmer, woodier tone sounds good to me. So, what strings immediately spring to mind when you hear this (rather heavily compressed, or at least it sounds that way on my laptop speakers) tone?
You could always shoot him a message on youtube, but generally DR Hi Beams are a favorite among slappers.
MarloweDK's a nice guy; he'll answer you if you ask him a question. Go ahead and ask him all about his tone. Actually I think he posts here too, but I haven't seen him post recently.
Totally in the groove. Not overly flashy. No wasted motion. Not beating the crap out of the bass. Oh yeah and killer tone! Would love to know what strings he's using as well!
His youtube section says he uses DR, D'Addarios and La Bellas. No more specifics. I'll shoot him a message later.
I've just put a set of DR Hi Beams on my graphite neck Jazz (the fretted one). They're nice strings, zingy bright but with plenty of grunt in the mids and nice definition in the lows. I'm unsure yet whether I prefer them to my usual Rotosound Swing Bass rounds or not. I certainly don't prefer the price - £29 a set over here, about twice what I pay for Rotosounds (understandably, I suppose). I've got a gig tonight and I'll get a more accurate impression of them then, but if I like them enough then I could pick up a few sets while I'm in NY next month, the price would be a lot more reasonable there.
