Nicest Fender I've seen

If the Currecny converter I used is on-track, 5350 Euros equals $6700 US Dollars.
The Fender Custom shop and this builder are one-offs.
Like the Foderas, Jens Ritter, and others, you don't GO THERE and even think about the price.
If it's what you want, you gladly pay it, and what you get is worth beyond dollars.
Concerned about price?? Go elsewhere! Sure there are many fine basses for less, MM, G&L, Lull, whatever.
But this one is A Fender Custom Shop. It's an amazing, beautiful bass.
If it wouldn't KILL my checkbook, I wouldn't bat an eye about paying 6 large for that instrument.

I'm sure its a very nice bass and all, but comparing a bolt-on bass with a quilt maple top to a $7,000 Ritter or Fodera is asinine.
I don't see what is asinine about it. In both cases we are talking about one of a kind, handmade instruments. Remember, there are tons of inexpensive neck through, multilaminate basses, just like there are tons of inexpensive bolt-on basses.
In any case, you'll never see me spend that much on a bass, unless I become pro. Being a weekend warrior means I don't get a ton of return from being a musician. I get enough to justify good gear, but I'll never lay down that kind of cash for a bass (or amp, or cab).
I was thinking more about the materials and labor costs as well as the construction techniques used to some extent.
Say what you want about the Fender being a one-off, but the builder still has all the advantages of working for a large corporation. Bulk prices for wood, easy access to machinery and tools, overhead costs spread out over a large production line, etc...
Also, although you're right that there are lots of cheap multilaminate basses out there, the way they are constructed as opposed to a Smith, Fodera or Ritter differ a lot. Those basses take a lot more time to build due to the complexity and extravagance of the design.
However, maybe asinine was too strong of a word to use. I could definitely see that Fender costing as much as a comparable Sadowsky. Those are all handmade one-offs as well...or at least to the extent you could say any Jazz bass design is a one-off. $7,000 though, now way.

Read the article again. It's built by a Master builder at the Fender Custom Shop.

And for those complaining about the price, I bet my ass off that the master builder who made it is as much competent as Vinnie Fodera or CT or anyone everywhere. If he's a master senior builder at Fender, he gotta be effing good.
BTW, if I remember right, Master built are hand built and not CNC (but plz, don't quote met on that, not sure at all)

Absolutely gorgeous.
Yes, the price is high, but VAT is an absolute pain both ways. Part of why EBS, TE, Wal, Statusd are high priced here. Not the only reason, but a big one. That's why countries have that "most-favored nation" crap. For example, from here to the UK, it's 17.5%, before you figure out freight costs, etc. And remember, that's against COST, which is normally anywhere from 50-75% of retail.

I agree. MyUsernamehere made a statement, and I disagreed. We were both respectful about it. There is no reason foranyone else to get bent out of shape over the discussion of the price of a bass guitar.
BTW, I still believe that the bass in question is probably much closer to $4,000 in the US than the price mentioned by the British dealer.
For what it's worth, I wouldn't pay $4,000 for it, or any other boutique Jazz. If everything were going fine for me, I think my limit would be around $2,500, but frankly my 1K Fenders really satisfy my needs just fine.

Fender number match with their standard models to the uk, what they sell for $800 in the US, will be £800 in the UK, or very close to that number, I have no doubt they would use the same tactic with their Custom Shop.
How so ? Regardless of it's fancy top and Hipshot type bridge and other minute modern complexities it's still a Jazz bass and if my memory serves me correctly it was ( leo ) Fender that design and came out with the 1st Jazz bass uh....... 47 yrs ago ?Total Sadowsky Standard knockoff.
I think that that's a pretty impressive looking bass, but I really hope that that look doesn't mark the future of production line Fenders
