Each to his own, but I think that is the most overpriced bass I've seen. I love the way the article makes it sound as though the builder goes away and designs the preamp, and then has a think and winds the pickups, after hand-carving the body with century old tools, when in fact he probably specifies a top to go on a light piece of ash, someone else puts it on the cnc machine, picks a pre and p/ups from a selection on a shelf, and puts them all together VERY carefully. I'd rather have two Lowend Jazzes, or Sads, etc ad infinitum. It doesn't even look like you get birdseye maple for your money. Another Fender marketing job. Would a Warmoth look as good? It could do, and it might sound as good too, if you weren't the sucker paying all that money for it. (IMHO of course)

How so ? Regardless of it's fancy top and Hipshot type bridge and other minute modern complexities it's still a Jazz bass and if my memory serves me correctly it was ( leo ) Fender that design and came out with the 1st Jazz bass uh....... 47 yrs ago ?
That comment was meant to be ironic.
But there is some truth to it. No PG, rear route, fancy top, 4 inline controls, preamp, high mass bridge. Was there someone who did that before Roger?

Trust me, there are a lot of places that are far worse for things like that. It's one reason I like TB. The riff-raff cleans out pretty regularly.

This has been done so many times before--Someone posts a beautiful instrument, then we go off on how "I wouldn't pay the price for that..."
Been done with Sadowsky's, Ritters, Foderas, Alembics, Carl Thompson, MTD, whatever.
The awesome bass posted is built by a Master Builder at Fender Custom Shop, run independently of Fender MI.
They have production instruments, team-builds, and this one, a Master-Built.
Read his creds. Do you think Keith Richards et al even cared about the $$??
Whomever ordered this particular instrument willingly paid the tab, asked for it to be built, and hopefully is digging the He**
outta it. I would.
This pithing contest about whether its the same as...whatever... or whether it's worth what Fender charges..
Get over it.

That's pretty. You could get pretty much the same thing from any number of other places for way less. I suppose some of it is the wonky exchange rate, but still.
Speaking for myself, saying I wouldn 't pay for something is no putdown. Like most people, I have my limits of what I will spend on any given thing. That does not mean that I don't appreciate things that are beyond my budget. That Fender is beautiful, but it costs way more than I can even consider spending.
+1. A general rule for Fenders is whatever it sells for in US dollars here, just swap a pound sign in its place. Sad but true.
Its not $7000 here in the US. You're looking at included taxes and duties as well as fender's UK mark up.
Thats not how the Masterbuilt series works. The Masterbuilt instruments are one offs built by the Masterbuilders for the most part. Many of the instruments that come out of the Fender Custom shop aren't Master Built, they're Team Built.
That justifies the price in my opinion, not that I would buy it anyways. If Roger made everything by hand, his prices would be upped considerably. Would those Sadowsky's then be the most overpriced things you've ever seen?

I SERIOUSLY doubt that Master built Fenders are made 100% by hand either. No one carves a neck and body out of a slab of raw lumber with a chisle and plainer. Again... very nice bass though!

As beautiful of a bass that it is (wonderful quilt), I think my FMT Jazz is as good looking if not better looking bass, IMHO! And mine was a standard production bass....and much cheaper too!

That is very nice looking. Ever see a Wilkins? or a Wilkins custom finish? Looks very similar. I've been eyeing one up.
No, they use rasps, files, sandpaper, routers and sure forms.
BTW, when you commision a Fender Masterbuild, when it has been agreed upon, the next step is that the luthier chosen for your build gets in contact, and goes over how you want the neck shaped, and if you want the body smaller than average, lighter etc. They go over everything, to make sure the bass is 100% to your specs. They'll even build non Fender shapes for you, look at Alien Ant Farm's bassist's custom Fender, looks more like a Warwick........
A Fender Masterbuild is a complete custom, as far as any luthier makes.

Your sunburst shows off the quilt better than the dark green of the Custom Shop model. I'm happy to see that both of them aren't covered up by a pickguard!
