Nicest Fender I've seen

Squier FTW :hiding: :D

Meh. It's a nice bass but it's not a nice fender, If you get what I mean.

Here's an analogy; Say Ferrari tried to make a bentley style luxury estate car.
It'd be a nice car, a really nice car even, but It wouldn't be a nice ferrari.

Idk, that's just the way I feel about this one haha.

Here's a Wilkins finish.

FWIW, I love it! I think it is a beautiful bass!

As far as basses being totally hand made, necks carved etc. Moser Custom Shop, BC Rich Custom Shop (at least they used to be, claim to still be), Bernie Rico Jr. are all totally hand carved wood. (Just to name a couple I am aware of).

Just the terms Fender uses, like "Master Built" v "Team Built" are all part of the system they use to add value to their products - they differentiate what is essentially a very nice bass built using all of Fender's machinery, timber supplies, bulk buying of electronics, etc, with a few, usually fairly minor, variations from standard (neck width, etc) from their usual run-of-the-mill stuff. The extra work in that bass - and I admit it's lovely - isn't really worth that much, unless you're the kind of guy who likes to say "My bass is Master Built, it's not like yours" If you're not stinking rich, you can treat yourself to a "Team Built" instead - wow - a team of people making MY bass! Fender have always spent a lot of time and effort in giving their products little "extras", which enhance their perceived value. And years down the line, you get the whole "vintage" thing - more crap. The basses I bought in the early 70's are now revered, when at the time even the dealers said they were crap. If an old Fender has an unusal colour, it's more valuable, and if it's got the original pots it's worth more than if it had new ones and didn't make scratchy noises - your not talking about instruments here, it's more like the art market. I've always hated fender for their attitude to their customers, and I hate the reverential way people speak about their old products, and now their master Built products. After the Master builder contacts you to get your specifications (catch the note of Rolls Royce service in that phrase?) he probably gets someone to set up the cnc machine to order, sends off ofr the hardware, and away you go. I know a respected builder here who does build everything by hand from scratch, and he told me it takes about 50 hours of work to do a complete instrument (he doesn't wind p/ups, or machine tuners, etc, obviously) and he charges about a quarter of what that bass cost. Fender are creating an image for what is essentially a slight variability on an old (and I admit, great), design which isn't available straight from the the factory, and which they can price how they wish, and good luck to them if people buy them, BUT you can only say they are worth it if they are worth it to YOU - there is no way that price is reasonable unless you're a Fender worshipper. MY Ferrari has a custom gear stick and a unique colour, so it's worth four times the guy down the road's Ferrari, but I don't like to talk about it.

Read this post, I underlined the important part.

No, they use rasps, files, sandpaper, routers and sure forms.

BTW, when you commision a Fender Masterbuild, when it has been agreed upon, the next step is that the luthier chosen for your build gets in contact, and goes over how you want the neck shaped, and if you want the body smaller than average, lighter etc. They go over everything, to make sure the bass is 100% to your specs. They'll even build non Fender shapes for you, look at Alien Ant Farm's bassist's custom Fender, looks more like a Warwick........

A Fender Masterbuild is a complete custom, as far as any luthier makes.

It's the attitude of worship that annoys people, I think. And the fact that people get jumped on if they disagree. No one said it wasn't a nice bass, rather that Fender Custom shop is way overpriced unless you want to say "THIS IS FENDER CUSTOM SHOP" As I said, if it's worth it you, it's worth it to you, but, like eating truffles wrapped in gold leaf, the value is in the image and the conspicuous consumption, rather than in the thing itself. The way that article is written, I half expected the writer to say that someone from Custom shop comes round and gives you a BJ when you take delivery of the instrument. Take the decals off, and see if there's any difference in quality between it, and say a Valenti, or Sadowsky, any any other competent luthier who cares about his craft. Plus, people are allowed to have opinions, just as they are allowed to spend their money on what they like.

If you have the money and you wanted a Fender Jazz bass tone would you get a Fender Custom Shop or a Sadowsky?

its hard to judge but only take a think about this

this green JB is hand made in fenders CS by the best of best´s and compare it with "in fact" off-sourced kit bass from those famous boutique builders(and as R.S. confess here everyone of such builders do it this off- source way and thats why he doesnt regard it as anything strange....for me its ******** argument but who cares...) with same price tag...I know its begining of flame but this thread is so OT that it couldnt be worse :D

I can't see getting riled up over the price of this bass. When basses really get pricey (over $3,000 for me,) the argument for buying is no longer only about value or quality. Either you are willing to spend the money, or you are not. There is nothing wrong about either decision, and it is definitely not worth an argument.

For example, I don't think for one minute that Foderas are better than Roscoes, Elricks, Stambaughs, Ken Lawrences, or any other coffee table top basses, but they have a market that pays what they charge. More power to Fodera and their customers!:D

Does anyone know, for sure, whether the Masterbuilt instruments are all built from the "ground up" or whether they are assembled (with care) like a Sadowsky? It seems to me there is nothing on the website which indicates either way other than that you can get one built from the ground up.

Ok, let me think, you have a 1 000 000 $ worth Ferrari (4 times normal price you said so 4x 250 000$ looks like it) and actually having a rant about a 6000$ bass? I guess you don't have a ferrari at all:scowl:. You think Fender praise is overwhelming, you never heard of Sadowsky/Lakland basses? At first I was like you for these two basses, but, you know what? I've had some more time with these and now I think they are really good instruments. Fender deserves the love they have. They maybe not the best built instrument (here I'm talking about the standard production models), but they have a tone that is about the most usable of all basses on earth.

Say whatever you want, this bass is worth its price. It is one of the best luthiers Fender has (can you imagine how much they have and how they can choose only the best luthiers to make their CS, it's Fender!! They got the money to get the best luthiers on earth!). So, we're talking about a hand-made, custom pickups and electronics bass, that's worth 6000$. Looks like the same price of a Fodera Monarch 4 strings which is a hand-made, custom pickups (sometimes not) and electronics bass. Fodera are awesome bass and people adore them because they only put out awesome instruments here. People here simply think about the normal Fender and doesn't think about the fact that it is Master Builder, someone surely in the ranks of Vinnie building the bass. I'm sure that it is a really great instrument.

Remember, these aren't CNC made, aren't the same thing as run of the mill fenders and etc... Truly custom made and I'm sure it can easily compare to a Sadowsky (which is CNC built) in terms of quality and playability.
