Nightmare drummer audition

I agree with the main gist of your post. However, it's a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, because in the case of your friend, he almost undoubtedly COULD have moved out of his mother's house years ago, in terms of being financially able to do so and whatnot - he simply chose not to. As opposed to this drummer, whom, on the surface it seems, has other, less-legit reasons for still living with his mom.
The issue of his financial status should not be a matter for scorn either.

Well, way back when, it was animal hide/skin stretched over a hollow log. As late as in the jazz age, I read about references to calf skin heads.
Right. All the classic big bands like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, etc. had drummers that used skin heads. There was nothing else. That didn't change until the early 50s when Dupont invented Mylar polyester film. They are still used to day, esp with top orchestra tympani and snare players. More authentic for the classical repertiore, but extremely expensive. Classical guitars also used cow and sheep gut strings until nylon, which wasn't used for guitar until after WWII. And upright basses used gut as well with overwinding, a technology invented in the 1600s, which made the low notes possible in a practical way.

My band has struggled to fill our open drummer slot. We’ve had two great drummers who had to leave for personal reasons and since then it’s been a revolving door of disasters. I just need to vent. We auditioned the latest one last night. He was 20 minutes late. Didn’t apologize. He had three weeks to dial in 10 songs, 5 we picked and 5 he picked. He muffed one after the other. He is in his 50’s, is single and lives with his mother. We told him we’d call him to let him know. He needed directions to get back to the freeway, apparently he’s never heard of GPS. Later in the evening he sent our female singer a text, then sent another one at 2:40 in the morning. Here they are. I’ve only removed names to protect the innocent and guilty… Hello, i just wanted to say i had a great time jamming with you guys tonite. I wanted to mention i think you are great players and good guys but i did detect errors in all of our performances tonight. Your bass player who i think is terrific and who plays a great walking bass line ala Bill Wyman.. did play several wrong notes.. Myself who i did feel played well, with a groovy beat didnt hit every drum break with perfection.. Youre gtr player who had a weak tone and when i could hear him, had a ' scratchy' gtr tone was not perfect either.. My point is i think we can help each other and be a top notch cover band.. You guys arent quite there.. and neither am i but together i think we can reach that next level.. p.s lets get your gtr player a Marshall half stack and a Les Paul and grow some balls - Sincerly —- Here is the 2:40am second text…that he sent to my female singer…full stop.

I couldnt care less about your band. I wish i could have my way with your feet.
Wait... You found a drummer who can text??

People surprise me sometimes -they do and say the craziest things.

That's hilarious!

For most of the projects I've had in the last ten years I've played kick and snare pedals with my feet. I used to use a custom cajon with kick and snare pedals but a few years ago went digital with two KT10 pedals and a TM-1 drum module.

I prefer to play with a decent drummer....... but I also prefer to play one-man-rhythm-section than play with a bad drummer.

I love this.
Thinking of doing the same thing, quite honestly.

But I don't get the foot pedal orientation.
Do you trigger the pedal sounds with your heels, rather than the toes?

;)

I must “tread” carefully here. Not trying to high jack the thread either.

I too have never totally fully understood the feet thing. However, I DO KNOW THIS. Having seen  feet like this may be good for braking, but definitely are neither synonymous nor positive in the dainty department.
