Nightmare drummer audition

Someone shows up to an audition 20 minutes late without notification and a DAMN GOOD REASON:

"You're out - The audition was 20 minutes ago."

I think they went through with the audition a) because of the hard time they are having finding a drummer and b) because they all invested time in learning five songs that were picked by the drummer. Yes, 20 minutes late with no notice and no excuse is not a good first impression.

It's safe to assume if he's in his 50's his mother is at least in her 70's. They may live together but maybe she's not healthy and living with him. Yup, he's an unhinged loser, but living with a parent at that age isn't so strange these days. It never really was.

Yeah, I never understood where the living with a parent is consider a "loser thing" all your reasons are on point and we also do not know, while this guy is for sure a freak, he may have something mentally off his mother helps him, simply loves his mom, mamas boys I know can be odd for some but hey they exist. Also older Italian-American houses and Greek-Americans like on my mother side, everyone would pretty much live together, while the tradition is pretty much over for most, it was a thing.

As a Greek-American, I lived it. My grandmother, my Mom's Mom, lived with us or very close to us almost from the day my Grandfather died in 1969. She only went to nursing home in her last 3 years. She lived to almost 92. I'll probably have my mother or mother in-law at some point.

Honestly, the guy seemed nice in person. If he’d said sorry I’m late there was some accident on the way, and he sent a nice text afterwards apologizing again and saying that he knew he wasn’t perfect but would put in the work and really liked all of us, we were leaning towards giving him a second chance. The whole band is glad he took himself out before we got two months in and wasted our time. The suggestion about asking why he left previous bands is a good one @Pocket Dave I interview people for hire and that’s always a question I ask. “So why did you leave your last job”. If you dig, people frequently bury themselves. This guy probably would have. By the time we got to the Q&A portion of the evening I was already done with him. We’re using a sub this Sunday for a winery gig, and a different sub for a Halloween weekend gig. Let the search continue!

I also wouldn't be too harsh with being late as well. The way people drive, the way things are in the world. I 100% would also cut some slack, if there was an apology. It's so odd he didn't bother... anyway hope your searching is going better, blessing in disguise or should I say miracle in plain view that he didn't like your group LOL.

My band has struggled to fill our open drummer slot. We’ve had two great drummers who had to leave for personal reasons and since then it’s been a revolving door of disasters. I just need to vent. We auditioned the latest one last night. He was 20 minutes late. Didn’t apologize. He had three weeks to dial in 10 songs, 5 we picked and 5 he picked. He muffed one after the other. He is in his 50’s, is single and lives with his mother. We told him we’d call him to let him know. He needed directions to get back to the freeway, apparently he’s never heard of GPS. Later in the evening he sent our female singer a text, then sent another one at 2:40 in the morning. Here they are. I’ve only removed names to protect the innocent and guilty… Hello, i just wanted to say i had a great time jamming with you guys tonite. I wanted to mention i think you are great players and good guys but i did detect errors in all of our performances tonight. Your bass player who i think is terrific and who plays a great walking bass line ala Bill Wyman.. did play several wrong notes.. Myself who i did feel played well, with a groovy beat didnt hit every drum break with perfection.. Youre gtr player who had a weak tone and when i could hear him, had a ' scratchy' gtr tone was not perfect either.. My point is i think we can help each other and be a top notch cover band.. You guys arent quite there.. and neither am i but together i think we can reach that next level.. p.s lets get your gtr player a Marshall half stack and a Les Paul and grow some balls - Sincerly —- Here is the 2:40am second text…that he sent to my female singer…full stop.

I couldnt care less about your band. I wish i could have my way with your feet.
Female band member's reply:
Come on over. My feet are currently clad in a pair of Kodiaks and if you were agreeable to strike a moderate straddle, either of them would be happy to oblige.
Note, you'll need someone to help you home, a PSW and counseling to adjust to your new lifestyle.

You have watched too many Cronenberg movies.

This living-with-a-parent thing is an easy criticism to make, but a total cheap shot. Maybe they support each other in many ways - financial, emotional, practical. He may be a great help and comfort to her, considering she is in her 70s. Maybe all they have is each other. I would rather live with my children as opposed to growing old and alone. There is a well known and prominent bass player on the west coast, many of you will know his name, an old old friend of mine, who lived with his mother his whole life, because of these reasons. No shame. She died a couple of years ago, now he is alone, but who cares, just mock the man, I guess, even though he plays his ass off and is successful beyond probably most of us. I won't name him, because not sure he could withstand the collective scorn /s. The kick-em-out-when-they're-18 philosophy does not pervade all cultures, nor should it.
Well said! I agree completely!!!

I don’t know - if he’s late to an audition he’s going to be late to a gig, and no one needs that kind of stress. First impressions are important.

I always show up at least 15 minutes early and text my contact that I got there early if they want to start earlier. I also show up to gigs early-ish.

A zebra doesn’t change its stripes.

If he wasn't wearing an ankle bracelet monitor, I'd say that his audition and post-session communication places him in well within the average range of drummer candidates.

I've thought about showing up to a gig with an ankle bracelet monitor and not saying a word about it to anyone and just see what folks reactions are.
