Nikki Sixx

Maybe someone here might be able to shed light on this story ...

Back around 1988 in Utah, I was playing a bar and on break, some guy playing pool kept dropping lines that seemed like typical barroom BS. He said something like "Back when I was Mr. Utah ..." (champion body builder competition) and "my son, who is in Motley Crüe ..." and "back in the day before my roommate, Billy Joel, got famous ...." Anyway later on I was telling the bartender about it, thinking how funny it was and the bartender said "I know for a fact that he was, indeed, Mr. Utah ... and his son is in Motley Crüe ... but this is the first time I've heard he roomed with Billy Joel"

So ... I am trying to guess which member of Motley Crüe his son was ... the only contender I can find is Nikki Sixx who lived in Idaho as a teen (apparently his father abandoned the family?). Just got curious about this, after all these years, when I saw this thread about Nikki Sixx.

Now the next question is;
Why do some musicians take it personally and consider it an act of war if you make a suggestion on their playing or mention the note they are playing is incorrect? It's like they feel you are judging them as a person and/or putting them down rather than working together to make the songs awesome?

Too much heroin or too little maturity?
Their playing is their art, art should be personal.

8th notes on the root pretty much sums it up.

He's a Junior, so his given name is the same as his dad's, Frank Ferrano. (or Ferrana I see it spelled sometimes)
The song "On With the Show" is about himself:

Frankie died just the other night
Some say it was suicide
But we know
How the story goes
With his six string knife
And his street wise pride
The boy was a man before his time
And she knew
All their dreams would come true
But ya see Frankie was fast
Too fast to know
He wouldn't go slow
Until his lethal dose
And she knows
He'll finally come too close
Well on with the show
Going on with the show
Come on baby
No, no, no
Oh my, my, my...(repeat)
He was bad
He was never good
But one thing that he understood
And she knew
All those lies would come true
The time has come and
He's paid his dues
Suzy finally got the news
She always knew
This day would come soon
He was stopped on a dime
With a switchblade knife
Some damn punk went and
Took Frankie's life
And she knew
She'd have to pull through

AFAIK they are still extremely estranged, he & his father.

Apparently he would anchor his pinky on a bracket mounted behind the bridge...never heard of any other bassist doing that.
Yeah the idea of it is that when you play with the pick it helps counter the neck dive on that bass. I play with my fingers so I didn't get anything out of it, but my guitarist gave it a try and said he really liked it.

For what it's worth I went ahead and bought the bass, and it's the most fun instrument I've ever owned, and people dig it too.

I am probably going to buy this bass https://Invalid Link Removed . Since it is one of his signature models I've decided to learn a bit more about the man. I know that he played for Motely Crue and Sixx AM. Though I don't know much of their deep catalogues.
In other words I am here for an education. Share stories of Nikki Sixx and your favorite basslines please, as well as anything else you feel is noteworthy on the subject.

Thank in advance,

I thought he was the guitar player

Looks pretty dope though

Unfortunately he's not making anymore videos from what I remember. That channel is worth binge watching if you've got the time though, really interesting interviews.
I love the "My Favorite Riff Series"

fav moment

Tom Morello: "I wasn't into shaging strippers and snorting blow, I wanted to be a real musician."
... (realizes he is talking to Nikki Sixx)

Nikki and Motley Crue are less about the music and more about the non-stop debauchery.........kinda like KISS: if youre judging them on music, ya kinda miss the point

Most of the “bass” on Dr Feelgood was actually keys...with the exception of a few fills (ex...fills at the beginning of Don’t Go Away Mad)

close....its a sampled set of whats called "One Shots": actual bass guitar samples of the best choice individual notes and a few phrases, all strung together on a track...I think Bob Rock used a Fairlight but it might have been Synclavier but Im too lazy to go look :D

what Nikki does or doesnt do in his life or playing music really has nothing to do with this bass..which is something he just got paid to do..you either love or hate birds..if I wanted to get one..I would go for one of the nice older gibson basses..this epi is a budget model..nothing more or nothing less..its not worth $100 to me..but it may be worth $1000 to you..buyer beware..

As others have said, Nikki is a solid but not spectacular player. He said his approach was deliberately simple and in the pocket as he felt that worked for his music with Motley Crue.

I actually played in a Motley Crue tribute for a couple years and it was a lot of fun. There were a few basslines that had some cool licks. I still have an Epiphone Blackbird with EMG’s and a Hipshot bridge. Great rock bass and sounds best played with a pick like Nikki Sixx does.
