Nirvana or Bob Dylan?

Did you even read what I wrote? Any kind of absolute rating system of artists across genres or timespans is totally arbitrary and highly subject to the raters' taste, and is therefore meaningless to anyone other than a rater him/herself, or someone with a nearly identical set of life experiences. Since I am not a music critic, have a real job, and have a different set of life experience than some random person cranking out artist listings, their opinions don't matter to me. I'd tell you that they shouldn't matter to you either, but that's up to you to decide, not me.

Dylan does nothing for me, while AIC and Soundgarden do. To me (and to a lot of people in my generation) they made more relevant, meaningful, and impactful music than Dylan. They are from a different genre, period of time, and mode of thinking/place in their lives as Dylan, without a doubt, and that affected the content of their music in a way that made it resonate in a different way with a different group of people. I happen to be part of that group, while you obviously aren't.

The only thing laughable here is YOU telling me that MY OPINION is wrong.
I've got nothing to say about your opinions. You stated this as fact:
"Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, who penned songs that were every bit as masterful as anything Dylan put out."

Check out the songwriter's forums, see what songwriters have to say.

When youre talking about subjective matters like this, opinions will often be stated as facts. The crux here is that this statement: "Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, who penned songs that were every bit as masterful as anything Dylan put out." is his opinion. And it is true for him. Your opinion differs. Both of you should stop the silliness get over yourselves.

Yeah, Dylan was never very good at that 'angst' thing....

"Masters Of War"

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks.

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly.

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain.

You fasten all the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion'
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud.

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins.

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
That even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do.

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul.

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead.

Quite like Nirvana, although I prefer quite a lot of stuff that influenced them (Pixies etc.) as well as a lot of stuff that was in turn influenced by them.

Dylan on the other hand, I am a pretty massive fan of. Lyrical genius. Nothing to do with growing up listening to his music, I'm 19 and listened to my fair share of Nirvana, but never really gave Dylan a good listen untill I was in my teens. Everyone is different, but I don't see how anybody can say they don't get an emotional connection with Dylans music, different strokes I guess. Go watch the intro to Watchmen. :D

I really don't see how you can compare the two. Very different, but Dylan wins hands down for me personally.

In 40 years, Bob Dylan songs will still be relevant, discussed, and interpreted and recorded by artists of all genres. I think it's a safe prediction that the most common comment on Nirvana in 40 years will be: "Who?".

Really? I know time flys, but Nirvana was 20 years ago, and they are still very well known now.

I agree that Dylan will probably remain more well known however.

I dont know about Dylan being well known... if you ask kids my age who Bob Dylan is, they'll say "isn't he like the dude who did the John Deere commercial or something?" if you ask them who nirvana is, they're the one band that "sung" "smells like teen spirit".

Aruging over the Internet whos better at songwriting, Dylan or Alice in Chaines = Serious bizness! :D

Everyone young here stating their ages, you're those people who go onto classic rock YouTube videos and have to state your your age if you're under 20, as if everyone's supposed to be impressed, aren't you? Just kidding. :D

Plus, this argument is moot, since everyone knows these guys are the greatest songwriters of all time: brokeNCYDE "Freaxxx" - YouTube

Everyone has an opinion. Personally, I'm not a fan of Dylan. I don't dislike him, but I'm not going to bump him and pretend it's good just to fit other people's standards of what 'good songwriting' supposedly is.

To me, it's no different than the hundreds of millions of people who think Lil Wayne and Niki Minaj create great music. Personally, I'm not sure if they actually create good music that millions like, or if it's some sort of gang mentality brought on by radio stations and music awards shows telling the people what good music supposedly is. It's easier for someone to be told to listen to this or that artist than for them to sit through and listen to different artists nonstop each day in search of the actual good stuff.

Regardless, like what you like and don't hate on people for having differing opinions.

Both Dylan and Nirvana have been very influential and I like them both. I prefer Dylan, and I don't see how anyone could say there is no feeling or emotion in his music.

Try "Tomorrow is a Long Time," "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," and "It Ain't Me Babe."

I wouldn't say that there's no emotion in his music, and obviously his music stirs a lot of people. Dylan's music has never stirred much emotion in me. I can appreciate his wordsmithery, but his singing style and delivery leave me feeling "meh" most of the time. My favorite Dylan songs have all been performed by someone else.

You should check out the Masked And Anonymous soundtrack. Best collection of Dylan covers out there IMO. Film a bit weird, but not Ronaldo and Clara weird.
