to my ears, the alumatones and the transsensors are bassically interchangeable, tone-wise.
The only reason I haven't switched to alumitones is that I'm perfectly happy with the sound of my barts.
It would only be for a cosmetic change.
<snip>
By telling me the alumitones are similar if not equal for sure you just ramped up my GAS.
i prefer single-coil barts myself...

The time I had it done it was a perfect chrome finish.That's the process I couldn't remember!
I am not positive that metal is actually being deposited on the plastic but we all have seen it and it is pretty close to chrome but without the perfect mirror finish.
Nope. I never "bashed the customer". I simply get tired of customers acting as though major corporations are tone deaf because they don't do the things you like. Which major corporation have you run lately?
And, again, Gibson may be making a mistake with their bridge. Who knows? But they aren't stupid. If they could turn a profit by putting Babicz bridges and Duncan pickups and Hipshot ultralight tubers on everything they sell, it would already be so.
As for "tested" ideas, how exactly does Fender "test" to see if you are going great to buy a Dimension bass?
As far asking their customers, the funniest thread ever would be a Fender exec coming here and asking "Hey, what do you guys really want in a bass?" There would be blood everywhere. I would take two days off from work to sit at my computer and read that action in real time.
As for "shooting themselves in the foot", the members of the board of directors are still making a gazillion dollars a year, right? Then who did they shoot again? Sure, not every idea is a good one. And the mistakes come off their bottom line. But did they really get where they are being stupid? Really? Stupid? Because they don't run a company like you would?

It doesn't sound like a bad idea, neither does the idea for a vinyl cover over plastic. My concern would be durability of the finish over time..That's still paint and not a chrome plating. Actual chromed metal is akin to gold plating. As far as I can tell the OP desires actual plated metal covers as is sometimes found on guitar humbuckers and the odd other pickup here and there.
Seen those. Very cool looking!I've never seen separate covers, but Warwick have some blingadicious pickups courtesy of MEC

Where did you get it done?The time I had it done it was a perfect chrome finish.
That is a sexy pickup, and I don't use the word sexy very often.Lace Aluma-J pickups. Even better than simple chrome pickup housings!
It's the Jazz-y sound you want in a light-weight package. The Aluma-J is a Passive pickup with high-output gain, patented "current-driven" technology only available through Lace pickups, and the deep, clean J-bass tone that you’ve been looking for! These full-range bass pickups extend the lows and highs of your instrument, reproducing the natural tone of your bass and its strings, all with zero noise! Retrofits into any standard J routs. Simple installation, stunning looks, and incredible bass tone.
