Bought a Deep Purple album because of Richie Blackmore but found myself more inspired by Glenn Hughes' badass bass playing! And yeah, I was digging that cool "Rick" sound!
OK, my first "Purple" album had David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. Learned to appreciate Roger Glover later on though! Richie Blackmore's playing always tends to be "self-indulgent" but ironically, it is the badass bass players (Glover and Hughes) who stand out.
Same goes for Chris Squire of Yes (while we are on a roll with badass "Rick" players here). Steve Howe could be replaced and Yes would still be Yes (proven with Trevor Rabin) but never without Chris Squire!
