No Love for Roger Glover?

Bought a Deep Purple album because of Richie Blackmore but found myself more inspired by Glenn Hughes' badass bass playing! And yeah, I was digging that cool "Rick" sound!

OK, my first "Purple" album had David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. Learned to appreciate Roger Glover later on though! Richie Blackmore's playing always tends to be "self-indulgent" but ironically, it is the badass bass players (Glover and Hughes) who stand out.

Same goes for Chris Squire of Yes (while we are on a roll with badass "Rick" players here). Steve Howe could be replaced and Yes would still be Yes (proven with Trevor Rabin) but never without Chris Squire!

Roger Glover was a very influential bassist to me. Just amazingly creative. Listen to his work playing behind Blackmore's solo on Smoke On The Water. Most bassists would be content to stay on the root, but Glover is tastefully contributing a very nice counterpoint to Blackmore's playing. Great stuff.

On many DP Mk II songs Roger's bass line is a driving force. Many bass players would play a simple, repetitive 8th notes on DP songs, but not Roger. For example, Roger's bass is all over the place on songs like Highway Star, Pictures of Home, to name a few. Moreover, his Ric tone is to die for. Although I consider Glenn Hughes the voice of rock, DP went downhill in the bass department in Mk III.
My first new bass (1973) was a Sekova Telecaster Bass copy. It was affordable and I thought it looked cool. But what really sold me on it was that it sounded (to me) like Roger's sound on Pictures of Home! I can get a lot closer now....with my black '73 4001. How can you not love that bass solo?

Btw, I thought Roger sounded good in Rainbow too. He was playing an old reverse T-Bird when I saw them live in the early '80's.
