No one "plans" to be a smooth Jazz musician

LOL!

I do admit I love playing the bass line to Careless Whisper

Have you seen/heard this version?

I never bothered checking who was the bassist on George Michael's tracks but there were some pretty good lines, even in the Wham days. And I always liked Careless Whisper......

Actually...i just looked him up, Deon Estus. Hes played with Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, Zappa, George Clinton.... He's definitely legit.

Hahahaha. That's good.

Really, though, smooth jazz CAN do harm. One time, for two weeks straight, I had the saxophone part from George Michael's "I'm Never Gonna Dance Again" stuck in my head. I was ripping the wood out of the expansion joints in this apartment complex pool deck and filling them with joint sealer and the office/clubhouse had a two hour loop of smooth jazz playing over the outdoor speakers nonstop. After a few days of it, that damn saxophone part got permanently embedded in my neurons. I can even hear it again now just by thinking of it. It will probably be there for the rest of the day.

I'm probably going to have this condition for life.

I have similar frustrations with the sax line sampled by Wreckx n Effect in their hit Rump Shaker.:(

The thing is, I don't hate the sax line at all. It's just so damn repetitive when it's in my head!!!! OH GOD MAKE IT STOP!!!!

It's called a good hook. When you think of that song, its the sax line everybody thinks of. Some musicians spend their whole life trying to come up with a hook as memorable. Others think the idea of a hook is too commercial. Personally I like hooks. But i'm a whore like that.
