Is there an amp out there that completely obviates the need for a DI stompbox (e.g., the Sadowsky or the SansAmp) by integrating a good preamp but also providing balanced XLR-out to a PA system? I'm looking either for a lightweight, relatively low-wattage head or a 1x12 or 2x10 combo.

You don't mention your budget. There's a Euphonic Audio combo in the classifieds that would fit the bill.

Actually, there are plenty of heads and combo's that include a balanced XLR output. Some even have ground loops, or pre/post switches. The one on my Mesa Walkabout works like a champ, never tried any of my other amps, but from reading here, not all DI's are created equal. And, I guess it would be tricky setting it up for a test, while still at the store. Maybe we need a comprehensive list of amps with studio-quality DI's, for the benefit of all.

My GK Neo 1001/212 combo has a direct out. Works very well.

Genz Benz Neo-Pak has a good tube preamp, and a good DI. IMHO.
