NOD! Hammond S-6 chord organ

A guy in my neighborhood is moving and wanted to get rid of this. I got it for $75. From what I've read, this model was probably built sometime in the late 50s, although I haven't found a good Hammond serial-number database. It needs a top-to-bottom cleaning, but it works, and it sounds pretty cool! I've only begun to explore the tonal possibilities.

My grandmother had two of those. Generally, they are called "chord organs". To state the surely obvious, you play chords with the buttons on the left and melody with the keyboard.

Well, now it's stopped working -- it switches on but isn't making sound, except for crackling/swirling/static. The guys at the Organ Forum say don't spend any money fixing it. This model apparently is a notorious money pit. A local guy I found charges a minimum $150 to show up and do one hour of repairs. So, I don't know.
