I just bought THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE BBC SESSIONS CD and Noel Redding kicks ass! He absolutely compliments Jimi's style waaaaay better in my opinion. Noel fits jimi's chaotic and brilliant style waaay better. Especially at this point of their career when they were brand new and fresh on the scene.

I was paying special attention to the bass playing and it's very aggressive yet tight. Excellent tone also. I like how the bass is up front in the mix too on this CD. I admit, I really have not paid any attention to noel redding much and never looked at billy cox until woodstock and the band of gypsies cd and realized he was good. But this BBC sessions CD made me see how cool noel redding was. Next pay day i'm gonna pick up the ISLE OF WRIGHT LIVE CD. :bassist:

See now, I donnow. I thought Billy was great, and kinda think that the record boys tried to "whiten" Jimi up a bit. Just speculation on my part, but ,as for regrets, I regret Jimi did not pursue, or was steered away from, his RB/soul roots.

Jimi and Stanley Clarke. Now that would have been a classic , never forgetton combo, or Marky Adams, or Boosty, or....

Not trying to diminish Noel's playing here.

bill cox was amazing. the live band of gypsies double cd....i believe it is live at the fillmore..hsi playing is great, he and jimi were always on te same page. i cant stadn noel, especially afetr seeing a clip of him trying to solo during one of the experience shows, it was awefull.

my favorite noel-era hendrix songs are jimi's version of "sunshine of your love" and "killing floor"

imo cox was just as good as redding they just had different styles...for the most part, i find that cox kills at the more laid-back songs, while redding kills at the more hyper, chaotic songs

I'm sorry but Noel Redding (RIP) was a bloody awful bass player, a terrible songwriter and extremely arrogant.

He had a second band going at the same time as being in the Experience and didn't even show up to a lot of the recording sessions, so Jimi had to record his parts for him.

Then the guy was upset that Jimi and Mitch got all the attention! Maybe it was the fact that there was something about Jimi and Mitch's playing that was actually worth listening to?

Noel Redding was definitely the weak link in the trio. He only got the job 'cos Billy Cox didn't want to fly out to London with Jimi, and then no bass players turned up to the audition. Noel Redding was asked to try bass instead of guitar at the audition - he'd never played bass before... and it shows.

Noel sounded like what he was a guitar player trying to play bass. I saw Hendrix live and Noel's sound was all bottom no note definition. In other words you felt him more than heard him. Like Billy Cox much more.

I wouldve really liek to seen who wouldve taken over teh bass player spot if Hendrix hadnt died. Mitch Mitchell says that Hendrix told him he was growing tired of Billy's playing and the two of them were thinking of other bassists they could use. Mitch said that Jack Casady and Jack Bruce were high on the list.
