The ISP Decimator comes in either rackmount or pedal form. One of my guitarists has one (the pedal version) and the other has an NS-2.... The guitar player with the Decimator has noticeably less noise (though their amp rigs are pretty different- he has an all-tube rig and the guy w/ the Decimator uses solid-state preamp + tube power amp...)- I tried both with my bass and the Decimator seemed far easier to use and effectively removed the noise without effecting tone. The Boss did as well, but it took a couple tries to find the right settings- it did seem to change the dynamics of my sound, but barely...

The Boss is quite a bit cheaper however, and certainly easier to find!

NS is best for noise that emminates from within the send/return loop. It doesn't work as well for noise that's generated before the input jack - in that case, it works no-better than a regular, non-remote-sensing gate or expander.

The Decimator (at least the rackmount version), as well as featuring a broadband expander, has a dynamic low pass filter - Now THAT's a whole-other step against problem noise.

Like I've said: nothing else but the NS-2 is needed for high-gain, dense-harmonic distortion that's in its loop. In that case you don't need a dynamic filter because whenever there's signal, there are 'masking' harmonics in the high-freqs. For more tricky situations, you need a dynamic filter.

Picture it: the dynamic filter looks for highs; it finds the highest frequency in the program material that's above the user-set threshold - and puts a high-cut filter on everything above that! Nice.
