NOLA jazz fest 2024 Lineup

Not anymore. They've expanded to being a bad generic knockoff! (Seriously, I don't think they're "bad", but yeah, they've turned out a bit less interesting than I had first hoped. Still, "Heat Above" is more than barely listenable, pretty good stuff, to my deaf ears. So maybe I'll give them "advanced mediocre" hehe. Still, boys got da pipes!)

The way I heard it said by the organizers was that all of this pop / rock and other stuff pays the bills, brings people in, and lets them keep the jazz festival going and growing. As if it might've died off without the expansion...

Sonny was still playing in 2010 it seems. Actually I see it isn’t really considered a jazz festival anymore, that is just the name that has remained for marketing purposes.

It is now a “festival” that has that name.

And of course they are rolling out Irma Thomas again, she hasnt put out any music since the 60's !

I'm gonna respectfully throw a yellow card here, brotherman. Irma Thomas is the universally esteemed grande dame of NOLA music, remaining quite active both on and behind the scenes. If the fest is officially called "Jazz and Heritage," then she is assuredly a linchpin of the "Heritage."

This was the lede of an email I got from WWOZ yesterday:
The Jazz Fest 2024 lineup is out!!! Jon Batiste, The Revivalists, Big Freedia, Juvenile with Mannie Fresh, Irma Thomas, Cyril Neville, PJ Morton, Galactic, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Terence Blanchard, The Radiators, The Dixie Cups, The Soul Rebels, Samantha Fish, George Porter, Jr., Leo Nocentelli, Zigaboo Modeliste, Tab Benoit, Stephen Marley, Dumpstaphunk, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Amanda Shaw, John Boutté and sooooo many more amazing artists will be gracing the stages at the Fairgrounds this year!

Yeah, I'm in agreement on the "WTH?!?" factor in re Greta Van Fleet and their ilk. But don't tell me the best of NOLA sounds aren't getting their due while the organizers try to keep the economics out of the red. (If you don't know Galactic, check 'em out.)

At the end of the day, no one's compelling anyone to buy tickets. Don't like the lineup? Don't attend.

'New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival' - 'new and improved' with even less Jazz than the previous year. I kinda wish they'd just change the festival name, since Jazz is maybe 10% of what's on the billing. Always irks me. Jazz has become a marketing term and not much else for most of these festivals. 'New Orleans Heritage Festival'? Sure.

I’m guessing from the comments yall ain’t from New Orleans and didn’t grow up going to the Fess.

Personally I still think it’s the best festival in America. Food is amazing and you get a huge variety of acts. Something for everyone. That’s the point. This is New Orleans. As much as outsiders want to believe everyone is riding alligators to work, that’s not true either.

I was born and raised and spent 30 years in New Orleans. The city has a ton of problems but throwing a party ain’t one. Stop crying and get your ass down there.

I’m gonna offer an opposing perspective.

How many current/new-ish musical acts can any of us name that are genuinely influencing middle school and high school kids to WANT to play bass in a guitar oriented rock band?

How many current musical acts are actively driving young people to seek out the kind of hard rock that we grew up with?

And lastly, how long has Zep been gone? That has been a void for 44 years!
I don’t hear anyone hating Black Crowes for pretending to be the Faces. Heck, this forum has made Gods of a Canadian Led Zeppelin wannabe trio.

I just don’t get the GVH hate. They’re good musicians and they’re revitalizing a pretty dead rock scene among an audience that hasn’t been interested in heavy guitar rock. If anything we should appreciate that they’re helping keep our olde selves relevant.

Anytime young people are playing music with actual instruments and other young people are into it, I’m in full support.

But this is a god awful "jazz" lineup. The whole lineup is pure irony. Blues acts I think are fine, they are from and connect to a similar time period of jazz, while two different worlds of music they for sure can connect.

I get that they gotta get people to come but at this point I agree they are better off just actually attracting jazz fans. I mean there are jazz acts going on at the event but I feel if I had the money and time to go to this show as a jazz fan I wouldn't even bother, I know most of the people are gonna be Foo Fighters and Stones fans, rock and roll party types, why do I want to go to that? I mean it, better off going to Blue Note.

I don’t know, there’s eight days to fill with music so to judge it a joke/failure based on 5~6 bands seems a bit presumptive, especially when you consider the name of the thing is the New Orleans Jazz AND Heritage festival, and given the rich musical heritage of Nawlins, one would expect a big variety of music to choose from. My first trip to this show was specifically to see Asleep at the Wheel, and I got to see them, but I also got blown away by 2 days of everything from jazz to blues to funk to jam to western swing and I only saw a small number of the acts that performed in those two days. Unless you are the type who would boo Bob Dylan at his first electric show, maybe you should look into the full lineup. I'll bet there is plenty of jazz to be had.

In 1969, Led Zeppelin played the Newport Jazz Festival, performing right after Buddy Rich, and I’ll bet that the average audience member at the event was aghast that such a gawdawful racket like that was allowed to spoil the evening.
