I'm gonna offer an opposing perspective.

How many current/new-ish musical acts can any of us name that are genuinely influencing middle school and high school kids to WANT to play bass in a guitar oriented rock band?

How many current musical acts are actively driving young people to seek out the kind of hard rock that we grew up with?

And lastly, how long has Zep been gone? That has been a void for 44 years!
I don't hear anyone hating Black Crowes for pretending to be the Faces. Heck, this forum has made Gods of a Canadian Led Zeppelin wannabe trio.

I just don't get the GVH hate. They're good musicians and they're revitalizing a pretty dead rock scene among an audience that hasn't been interested in heavy guitar rock. If anything we should appreciate that they're helping keep our olde selves relevant.

It's just too dervative for me to enjoy. I'm also past the point in my life where all the rawk posin' and preenin' is something I'm interested in. I'd rather that young people were getting inspired to do something new, as rock certainly needs it.

They are. Rap. And synth composition.

Seems this thread is mostly about nomenclature....

I've attended at least a couple days for just the past few years. The variety and caliber of acts is superb, food is outstanding, price is still pretty good. The food and bathroom lines can be tough and the fairgrounds can get muddy, but overall it's a phenomenal time. Attendees tend to be great folks.

Wife and I already have tix for Rolling Stones day, Dumpstaphunk plays that Thursday too.

I haven't been to Jazzfest in 25 years or so, and it was already like this back then. Great festival though, with a much broader spectrum of music than you typically get. And awesome food, natch.

There's plenty of that amongst all the KEXP and Tiny Desk Concert videos. There hasn't been a unified youth rock audience for decades anyway.

TBH, I'm at a loss as to why all the agita over semantics.
There is also the fact that It's the jazz AND heritage festival, but so many folks either forget the heritage part, or suffer from the misconception that jazz is the only musical heritage New Orleans lays claim to. It's 8 days of great music, great food, great hang. The only problem I ever had whenever I was able to go, was not getting all angsty about semantics and slots for music classification not being held to a more rigid standard. My problem has always been trying to decide which days I wanted to go. I've always had to pick a weekend which means no matter who I do get to see, I miss way more that I'd like to see.
I've only been a few times but I can say without hesitation, it's the all around best music festival I've ever been to. We had a yearly thing in Birmingham that was really good while it lasted, but it eventually got mismanaged into extinction.

I did, gave em a try. Sounds kind of like Gong with lesser chops. Definitely different, but even with all of the different styles, it has a sameness to it that doesn't really hold my interest.

Huh? Yeah, the guys in Gong were quite competent on their instruments, a lot of em were jazzers. What's the issue? I checked out several hours of KG and it just all had a sameness to it, and apart from the drummer, nobody blew me away. Sorry if that offends you.

Everything goes in cycles. Rock was theoretically dead when Interpol, the Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the White Stripes hit the mainstream.
