As much as I would like to do something, there is nothing of the scale of what I want to do around here, so once I'm done with college, before I get all tied up with employments and such, I plan to spend a good 6 months away, and I think a trip to Africa to help out in any way I can is really friggen awesome! Imagine how great you'd feel with an experience like that under your belt :)

That is what I hear from a few friends who are still down there. They have been there since early 2006.

It looks like I will be going back down sometime in late April or early May. It will be my fourth trip down I believe. Each time I go, I'm expecting things to be much better than the last time I was there. There has been a ton of progress made by some really hard working people. But really, there is way more to do. I wish I could move there.

Disaster relief work.

Tornado season is coming. Hurricane season is still off in the distance. Earthquakes occur around the world at any time. Volcanoes, severe thunderstorms, flooding.... there's countless opportunities.


First place to start, is the Red Cross. Contact them.

Also, Amnesty International.

Donations or collections for Purple Heart.

Salvation Army.

This. Outside of New Orleans, Louisiana and Mississippi are still wrecked. My church sends people out there a couple times a year to help with rebuilding efforts. A bunch of families went over spring break, and looking at the video they brought back, there's still lots of destruction. It honestly looks like a 3rd world country in places.

FEMA pisses me off. As a lifeguard EMT, I'm trained in disaster management. Unlike firemen we're trained in dispatching and how to allocate resources for multiple rescues and emergencies at a time. As soon as we started seeing this unfold on TV, we put together a team. FEMA told us that it was under control and they didn't need anymore help. :scowl:
