Noob already looking for second bass...

I've been playing for a couple months now, learning with Ed Friedland's Bass Method books. Just finished the first and starting on the second until I have the time to take lessons. I've got an Ibanez AFB200 but I'm looking for a traditional bass for a 2nd.

So, here are my thoughts...
I was looking at the Ibanez SR500, but some research on the forum tells me it's a rebranded Cort so I was looking at the Cort Curbow. Thoughts?

Also, I could use some guidance on whether to stick with the 4 string or get the 5 while I'm at it. I'm interested in playing some jazz, some rock. My musical tastes are pretty varied so I imagine I'll be playing a little bit of everything.

Lessons are in my future, my work schedule is just insane right now and can't say from 1 week to the next when I'll be working so until it settles down a bit it'll be me, Ed Friedland, and my guitar playing son.

You need to pay more attention to practicing than getting into buying instruments. i played my 1st bass two and a half years before buying another.

Doesnt mean you have to , im just saying practice makes perfect not a new instrument every 2 months.

In this case his first instrument is a semi-hollow artcore... which is certainly a cool instrument to have, but it's not the most versatile thing to be starting on. I certainly couldn't get by if that was my one-and-only. I say, if the OP wants something more traditional, by all means, go for it. Can't comment on the particular basses in question, but I usually recommend more towards Fender style classics, but only you know what's to your taste.

IMHO just wait until you know for sure your going to be playing bass for the next 10+ years. If your already there, then save or if your sitting on some xtra $$ buy a nice used high-end bass. Now that i have my EBMM Sterling (which i bought use in new condition for like 40% less) i wish i wouldnt have spent my money on the intermediate gear and just held on the my squier until i could afford what i really wanted... Just an opinion, ill go ahead and recommend a Sterling since im in love with mine. check out some other Music Man basses too. That said its all in taste, try all the major brands Fender, Music Man, Ibanez, Schecter, Warick, the list goes forever.... Go to a local store and play everything you can get your hands on, when you find the right one youll probably know within a few mins.

Thanks for the feedback. The 2nd bass isn't going to happen today or in the next several months, just looking to see whats out there, wanting to expand my horizons. I've been thinking about playing for a long time and now that I'm doing it I don't plan on stopping- I LOVE it.

Of course I need to practice- that's what I'm doing as much as I can. I know I'm as new as new gets but I'm also looking for something more traditional to learn on and play. I don't see a problem with that and a new instrument every two months isn't what I'm talking about here. My guess, LCW, is that your first instrument was a traditional bass. Thanks for the input though, and you're right about the practice.

Seriously... wait. You're just learning to play, what you like, what sounds grab you, what styles of bass grab you. Don't spend money you may regret. If you were frustrated with your sound I'd understand... but it takes a while to get there. Be careful here too, you're going to get all kinds of advice. Save your money, so when you know what you want, you can afford it!

It was a dean edge 4 string dual pick ups a higly recommended bass. Mine is beat from dragging through alot of high school bands and the suckers still works just needs strings.

i waited just under a year to buy a second bass. i was in a band quick though. i started on an ibanez gsr200, sold that last friday and now i have a modded sx pj. been playing for a year on bass, several years playing the low end in high school. honestly i have a hard time passing up a deal, instead i modded my first bass before i bought a second. plus that helps you learn more IMO. so now i have my amazing sx which is my main and a fender jazz build in the works. my two cents: buy used. most people on here will agree.

davecg2 im jealous, i want that bass. i played one for the first time the other day, they are hott!

i did the same got an olp stingray a little less than a year after i started. i was planning on getting a MM Stingray, but the Sterling lured me in with its looks then sealed the deal with the tone and playability. Im pretty much in love with it now...
