Look at it like this:
Every instrument has its role and purpose, whether its an orchestra, a string quartet, or even a rock band. Drums, for instance and meant to keep the time and rhythm as well as provide the accent point to song structures. Guitars are meant to keep the melody and harmony. Bass is really the most important instrument in the rock band setting because it is the only instrument that can keep the rhythm and perform the melody at the same time. Some very advanced players can also play the harmonies as well.
You, as the bassist, are the glue that holds the songs together. You can effect the mood of the song to a much greater degree then any of the other instruments. I suggest getting a teacher that will focus on the practical aspects of bass playing before you try learning theory. Its much more fun to be able to play what you like as you go along then to be able to identify the theoretical aspects of the song... learn theory later....
