Nordstrand + Audere coil tap

Hi all.

I'm just adding an Audere 3ZB pre to the Nordstrand fat stacks which I was previously running passive in my Lakland 5501.

Wired it up last night and it sounds great. I had to do a bit of guesswork for the coil tap though. The red wires from the pups go to the coil tap switch and then to ground, but 'ground' is not as simple a concept as it was when I was passive! I wired it to the middle tab of the socket, along with the bridge earth and the grey pup wires (pup shielding), but when I hit the switch it kills the sound.

What did I do wrong, and where should the coil tap ground be wired to?

Hope that all makes sense, and all assistance is appreciated. Thanks

The Audere uses a floating ground which is a bit different from most preamps. Look at the directions from Audere on using coil splitting at [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] :

Can I use a pickup coil selection switch?
Yes - follow the instructions or wiring diagram that came from your pickup manufacturer but use the Audere white wire with the green stripe in place of all ground connections. Do not connect the green stripped wire to ground!

This came up recently. You don't connect the tap to ground. You connect it to the pickup (-) input. For the Audere, the ground is a separate thing from the common return for the pickups.

Thanks for your answers!

I've also contacted Audere, who have great customer service.

The basic answer is that the red wires from the pups go, via the coil tap switch, to the green and white wire from the module, the same wire that the black pup wires go to.

If anyone is doing a similar project in the future, hello from the past, and hopefully this might be helpful.
