Nordstrand Poly Vox

I calculate that the price is for about 10 coils ;-)
This is a very intense and time consuming pickup to build. Every step takes exponentially a lot longer to finish. More winding time, more cutting time, more building time. So yeah, they are pricey. Check out the price of other comparable multi coils. Some think they are worth it, some think they are worth it but can't afford it, some don't think they are worth it. We get it, but we have to charge the appropriate amount.

Thank you, @SoniaMara!

These seem pretty hot in Carey's videos. How well do they interact with preamps?

Also, the BigRig in the neck has often been touted as too hot/unbalanced for a BigRig in the bridge. How well would a Poly Vox in the bridge balance with a BigRig in the neck?

We refute the notion that Big Rig necks are unbalanced with BR bridge. You made several peeps :woot: over here with that statement. We dont know about the BR/PV combo, but we may try it.

Carey says he is confident that it will play nice with any good pre. So far so good over here.

OK we tried it. 0 out of 10 do not recommend. Creates phasing issues.

I ordered a set of the Poly Vox 4 35’s and have a question out to Lusithand Devices on which of their NFP pre-amps would work with two of these. I have forwarded the questions from Nuno to ask how the coils and pickups are wired.

@Nordstrand

I ordered a set of Polly Vox 4 in 35DC size and want to use them with a Lusithand Devices NFP (or anyone who may want to use this pre-amp). I have communication emails with both Nordstrand Customer Service and Nuno from Lusithand Devices. Nuno has very specific questions about the wiring so that he may sell me the compatible NFP. I am not getting much in the way of answers from Nordstrand and thought I would post here since @SoniaMara is assisting. The following are the questions from Nuno and the answers from Nordstrand:

Nordstrand - "PolyVox is indeed one coil per string. The poles have the same offset as the BigRig, but instead of two parallel mounted coils, PolyVox has a coil around each pair of coils as they lie under the string courses."

Lusithand - “How many hot wires does this pickup have, do you know? Please, ask them how are the coils wired and how many hot wires are there on the pickups"

Nordstrand - "I know the leads are hot, ground, and isolated pole ground, but I do not know the internal wiring."

Nordstrand - "Internally the coils are in series."

This did not answer Nuno's question and the following are still pending:

Lusithand -
1) "How are they in series?"
2) "Two rows of series (vertically) or four rows of series(horizontally)?"
3) "Did they say how many hot wires are available to use?"

Question from me the customer:
"Are these the same depth as the EMG 35DC? The website only shows length and width. (Herrick pickups now makes a 35DC size multi-coil however they are 4mm taller which means the guitar needs to be modified)"

If I am digging for proprietary information, let me know and I can cancel my order and move on.

Stew at Nordstrand will absolutely get back to you. I’m sure they are inundated with orders and questions with the release of a new product. Give them some time to get back to you.

I may be off, but I think Nuno may be making the same assumption that many of us have made - that PolyVox would have two rows of coils. It only has one row, and my take is that they are all in series, giving one hot wire. I could be wrong tho, just my interpretation of the available information…

Based on this info Lusithand should be selling you the standard filter preamp with one hot and one ground connection. NOT the multi coil preamp with individual hookups for each coil.
(NFP, not NFP Special)

This picture, along with that description from Nordstrand, should have told Lusithand everything they needed to know.

I have information from both Nordstrand and Lusithand Devices:

Nordstrand - ""The reason they're called multicoil is because they have a three pole coil under each string (one is hidden in the middle). They are wired sequentially in series. So it's 4 single coils in series. One hot wire and two grounds per pickup. (Like BigSplits)"

Rout depth should be fine at at least 3/4" which is standard for our pickups. (to answer my question about the 35DC fitment depth)

Lusithand - "So, in this case, you would use the Double NFP preamp.
Even though it's multi-coil, because of the more traditional way the coils are wired, you would use a regular preamp."

Hi @RasJay did you still need info from Nordstrand?

@SoniaMara

I do have another question about the Poly Vox 4. Can they handle 24volts? I installed a Lusithand Double NFP in my Spector and am awaiting the arrival of my Poly Vox order.

In the meantime I wanted to buy a 24v mod battery as the Lusithand and EMG pickup are rated for it.

Unlike EMGs, the Nordstrands are not active pickups, so the batteries would not be connected to them
