Nordy Big Singles and Audere!

It's flat out awesome! Bright but not harsh and very modern take for a single coil!

I tend to boost the bass a bit but that's about it. The pan favoring bridge pup! :)

Anyone have experience with this set up? :bassist:

Your description of this pairing is right on based on my experience (bright in a very clean way, modern). It is the reason I really didn't dig it, but for a very clean, modern tone, it is great!

I found very little difference in tone between the Big Singles and Big Splits (as you say, the Big Singles are not really a typical 'single coil' pickup), so typically recommend the Splits over the singles, since they are a bit quieter when favoring the bridge pickup or whatever.

I was actually looking at the Ibanez SR1200e that has the singles. I really digged the look, but never tried the nordstrands. But I am really gassing for a new bass, and I really want it. How different from jazz pus are these (they claim to be on steroids)? I was also looking at a $$ and a MM HH, but can't decide between these three.

Edit: I was also looking at the Ibanez 600/700/750 with Barts.

I won't call it a J bass on steroids they are more soap bar sounding to my ears..

What kind of tones can it cover? I want to have low growls to play like technical metal and fat beatz to play some jazz. I really like the fact it has active/passive too.

Would you recommend this to the other basses?

I would recommed a pre-amp for such diversity but IMO its in the player.

Check this video out.. I think he covered a lot of genre in the clip..

First, glad you like the Big Singles, together with the Big Splits, they are unique pickups.

Interesting, I definitely hear more of a 'J' sound, but bigger and meaner…

BTW, soap bar pup it's a general description of a shape. SB pups can be dual coil (parallel/series), split, side by side sc….

There's definitely a J in there but its losing some of the SC grind..

Been playing it for 3hrs straight! :) When both pickups are on its a slap tone heaven! :)

I have a Nordy VJ5 with audere JZ3D and Big Singles. It's a very punchy and aggressive tone! Very good for slapping!
I normally use the mid Z position (with I think is the only usefull one) and cut a bit of the highs with the roll-off filter (which is a very nice feature of the preamp).

EFS

Before Nordstrand started making their own preamps their sold their basses with Audere preamps. That's from Nordstrand.
