Normal kids=ADHD?

I used to see it every day. My younger brother was out of control between the ages of 2-16. My parents had him on ritalin for more years than I can remember. It is sad really. We just grew up in an area where there were kids my age, but not his, so he didn't have anybody to go outside and play with to get rid of his energy. Instead, he stayed inside an got restless and would drive people crazy. So, they stuck him on ritalin.

I grew up in the 70s & 80s....

They had a cure for ADD and ADHD back then, It was called "Parenting & Discipline".

Thank you!

My cousin supposedly has ADD... Funny thing is, (he is 2 years younger than me) whenever he came over to spend a few days with me, all my mom had to do sit his ass in the corner for 5 minutes and he learned his lesson.

She never gave him his pills.

Ugh, drugging kids for ADHD really makes me MAD!

There are lots of things that cause ADHD behavior. Food allergies (being one of the top causes), bad parenting, no energetic outlet, too smart and bored in class, not understanding something and not knowing how to handle it, too much sugar, vitamin deficiencies, just plain bad diet, not enough sleep, no schedules, too much stimulation.

Don't even get me started!

I believe ADHD is a symptom, not a disease in adults or children. Find the cause, you wipe out the symptom. There are many causes.

I've seen enough cases of child and adult ADHD disappear without drugs to know it can be done. The pharmaceutical companies just don't want you to know that.

My mom had a classic line she told the teachers that wanted to put me on drugs.

"He's not A.D.D., he's B.O.Y.!" - Mom

Thanks Mom, for keeping me off drugs.....well at least until my friend Wes got ahold of.....eh.....what was I saying....oh yeah, thanks mom!!

I'm impressed.
You guys are so good that you can even "discipline" your kids when you're not around, at the moment where keeping them quiet, attentive and still is the most important.

Taking care of a kid with ADHD can be done when home. It's tiring, sometimes exhausting but it can be done and with enough efforts you can get him to behave just fine with minimal drama.

How do you do it at school ? The teacher is supposed to be busy teaching, not bringing the kids back to their seats 20 times an hour. You don't want the kids to be medicated, that's fine. I don't like it either. Does it mean that we can let kids with ADHD run amok, slowing down a whole class and completely wasting their time (and other kids' time) at school ?

Kids with ADHD who receive proper medication (which means minimal doses with effects limited to their working time) feel much better and comfortable, they realize it helps them a lot and actually feel happy to participate in the social life of their class.

When your 6 yo tells you "Daddy, I would love to be quiet, being able to concentrate and work like the other kids but my brain doesn't let me do it", will you feel like he just needs to be "disciplined" ?

What are your thoughts on adult ADD and medication for adult ADD?

Pharmaceutical companies realized that adults were going bananas for the child ADD drugs and decided to release some grown up drugs too!

Now we've got diseases that are diagnosed by the medication they want us to take instead of what is actually wrong with us. Most of which could be "prevented" by better diet, better sleep management, and not being a pansy.
