Normal kids=ADHD?

I'm impressed.
You guys are so good that you can even "discipline" your kids when you're not around, at the moment where keeping them quiet, attentive and still is the most important.

Taking care of a kid with ADHD can be done when home. It's tiring, sometimes exhausting but it can be done and with enough efforts you can get him to behave just fine with minimal drama.

How do you do it at school ? The teacher is supposed to be busy teaching, not bringing the kids back to their seats 20 times an hour. You don't want the kids to be medicated, that's fine. I don't like it either. Does it mean that we can let kids with ADHD run amok, slowing down a whole class and completely wasting their time (and other kids' time) at school ?

Kids with ADHD who receive proper medication (which means minimal doses with effects limited to their working time) feel much better and comfortable, they realize it helps them a lot and actually feel happy to participate in the social life of their class.

When your 6 yo tells you "Daddy, I would love to be quiet, being able to concentrate and work like the other kids but my brain doesn't let me do it", will you feel like he just needs to be "disciplined" ?

How come kids didn't have these problems 30 years ago?? We had two troublesome or problematic kids in my grade. The teachers delt with it. Now it seems like every other kid has some kind of special needs requiring some sort of special medication. My Son can be an over energetic pain in the ass but we keep him in skateboards and skatepark memberships. The only time he's calm is when he's dead tired from exercise. He also has problems focusing at school so we help him out with school work every night when he gets home. Several doctors wanted to medicate him................NOT!!

You're right. We stopped advancing medical and scientific research on medical and psychological 30 years and anything discovered / diagnosed since then couldn't possibly be a genuine medical problem that wasn't known about then. In fact, now I think about it, the world today is indentical to 30 years ago and there is no possible way in which the change in social pressures, expectations and stresses etc could account for increases in psychological issues in youth.

Although it's over-diagnosed nowadays, some kids can benefit from these drugs. It's not going to kill them to try it out for a few weeks.

The problem comes when people don't listen to their kids when they tell them the drugs make them feel depressed or don't help their attention span. They end up giving them a nice amphetamine addiction, then switching to some anti-depressant cold-turkey...

It can help, but you really have to listen to your kids and be aware of what exactly is being put into their bodies.

YES!

Children need to be taught self discipline. This process takes a long time; all childhood, in fact. If it isn't done properly in the earlier years it will be a lot tougher in the later years. There are a lot of children in my neighborhood, and I see too many of them with inattentive and permissive parents who are incompetent to teach their children self discipline. As a result, these kids behave in an out of control manner until their teachers insist that they be put on Ritalin. Problem solved! (Well, not really, just a symptom of the problem is covered up).

You're right. blah, blah, blah , blah, blah, blah... expectations and stresses etc could account for increases in psychological issues in youth.

Or we've just invented even more ways to excuse bad behavior. We can't blame little Timmy for being a turd! He's got ADHAutismObsessiveCompulsiveBiPolarAspergerDisorderSyndrome.

Their is a signifigant difference between then and now... good strong parenting.

Children are under more stress now, with more video stimulation, less social interaction, and less outside time.

So, clearly, the answer must be to make them amphetamine junkies for life.

Hey man, bring on the meds if that's what you think is the answer. I prefer to deal with my kids social pressures, expectations and stresses on a personal level without meds. Pressure, expectations and stress is part of life. I prefer they learn to deal with it than veg out and watch it go by.

If we are using them as excuses, why are people working on drugs and treatments to cure them. Clearly people don't want excuses, they want help. Are they over diagnosed? Probably. Does that make it any less of a real problem? No.

You said this wasn't a problem 30 years ago. I suggested that it might have been, we just didn't understand it and, even if it wasn't society is not the same as it is now. Now you are saying bring on the meds. That would suggest that you think it actually may be a problem. I didn't say meds are the best or only answer to the problem.

It wasn't a problem because it was corrected the old fasioned way. Nothing earth shattering there.

I'm all for a good spank when needed but just like drugs, they can't solve everything.
You can talk an issue out with a kid but it's pretty difficult when he can't focus on a matter for more than a minute.

Don't ask me why so many kids have these problems today, I have no idea. Did teachers turn to lazy slouches who won't be bothered maintaining order in the class ?
Or is it that all the tools they had to command children were taken away by defensive parents who will sue at the sight of the smallest punishment ?

The cure to ADHD is going to church.

I attended a Greek Orthodox service nearly every Sunday of my life until college. A typical liturgy is at least 2 hours long. Greek church isn't like other churches, theres no singing, and SILENT prayers. If I was loud, my grandpa and my dad had me under control. If you are way loud, everyone in the church looks at you, the priest stops the service, and asks your family to leave.

I was never a very religious person but the shame on my dad if his kid got us kicked out was enough for me to suck it up and sit still and silent for 2 hours.

Sure, there are some kids that have a problem. If a few good years of punishment (whatever kind you like) don't fix it, head for a doctor.
