Not all Precisions are created equal....

I love Precisions, always have. I used to have a 76 burst with a maple neck, it was my favorite. I sold it 5 years ago, i was disgusted with music and thought I would quit forever. It only lasted a couple of years until I got the itch again.
I now play a 62 reissue made in japan, good bass. My back up is a squier VM maple body, good value. I still miss that 76. Today I tried a 2011 made in US P, sunburst with maple neck. Now that's what I'm talking about, freakin' perfect. I just wish I had the $1299. Oh well I guess I'll a have to settle for now.

If you're like me, the trouble is, you could try another US P next week, and it might not do anything for you. People kick up a stink about Fender being inconsistent (rightly so IMO), but it happens with every brand to some extent.

You got to save your pennies, kiss lots of frogs, and be ready to pounce when the right one comes along.

I've got a 2003 Highway 1 that blows my mind. I got it for $365 here on talkbass and it has smoked most vintage basses I've played. It has such an open and lively sounds.
It almost always gets picked by others when I record.

Fender is plenty consistent. Trees aren't. :D

I've got a sunburst '72 P, alder body, rosewood board, and a "B" neck that is nearly the perfect P bass for me. Lightweight, the neck plays SO well.... just sounds like heaven opened the gates a crack and the heavenly choir is drifting down. I've owned/played a LOT of various P basses over the years ('08's included) and this one has been the top of the heap.
