Not all Precisions are created equal....

My highway 1 rocks. It's got tone for days and has THE most comfortable neck I've ever played. My only beef with it is the rosewood fingerboard. I really wish it was maple, but it still kicks butt!

I also currently have a Geddy Lee jazz and two stingray 4s. One HH and one standard. After a couple hours of playing the highway 1, the stingrays feel like baseball bats or something, and the geddy lee feels absent and frail. Don't get me wrong I love these other basses, but that Highway 1 just fits my hand like a glove.

My 1962 Precision. got it last year for $950 from a dude on Craigslist. He didn't exactly know what it was worth because it has been refinished and has a Jazz PU added.

YES it lives up to the pre-CBS hype. some people say these were the best crafted instruments in history. I would HAVE to agree after playing and hearing mine.

THE BEST playing Precision I've ever touched or heard, hands-down. It sounds cool out of a 4" guitar speaker, unplugged, and of course through my gigging rig. I've had many other musicians and studio people agree when they've tried it.

Also, probably the most inexpensive pre-CBS Fender I'll ever come across in a lifetime.

Nice deal, congrats! For the rest of us...
I've gotta fly the flag for MIM here. MY 2009 Deluxe is a million times better than absses I've played which cost twice as much. And it's just about indestructible...

I took a gamble on a MIM Road Worn P based on TB love - traded a 2008 MIA P for it straight up, and it knocked my sox off. The best affordable Fender production bass - and closest to real pre-CBS feel - that I've played in a long time. A GAS-killer and forever keeper/player.

My 84 P Elite II is the best playing, best sounding bass I have ever so much as held. Easily my favorite bass. Bought it online from a gospel music store in Atlanta, back in 2000. I'm working on collecting them.

If you're like me, the trouble is, you could try another US P next week, and it might not do anything for you. People kick up a stink about Fender being inconsistent (rightly so IMO), but it happens with every brand to some extent.

You got to save your pennies, kiss lots of frogs, and be ready to pounce when the right one comes along.

Good advice, I always hated Fenders for various reasons. Bought a MIM on opportunity about 5 years ago and the neck warped this way and that, so I sold it and revalidated my opinion of Fenders.

Recently wandered into a Pawn shop with my wife and saw a P bass, also MIM in mint unplayed condition ('96 model) with a SD Qtr Pndr and BA11 bridge in a hard case, wide strap, strap locks and spare strings. Played and felt wonderful, to the point I would say, it was one of the 2 best P bases I have played over 40 years.

Bought it and am very, very, happy with it.

I think Fender got it right with the RoadWorn series. I like every single one I've tried. Consistency at it's best.

I would not agree with that one. When they were introduced, they were so new I thought it was a genuinely old, read that very old, Axe. Picked it up and it was not much to admire and the electronics (pups) were pretty undynamic.

There was a new US P bass on the shelf so I comparted to two and if I had the $, I would have bought the AM bass as it was the very best I ever played.

The recent MIM P bass I picked up in a pawn shop was the all time 2nd best I ever played so I bought it.

Got my 50's Classic Precision 4 yrs ago. Modded it with Fralins, switchcraft jack, nos tone cap and CTS pots. Even the Lakland Bob Glaub I got a few months ago (sold it) couldn't come close...even after trying multiple pups. Have never had to tweak the neck, there is no buzzing and the action is superb and has room to maneuver in either direction. The best jazz I ever played isn't a Fender at all, but an 80's lawsuit Schecter. Just threw some TI's on it....love it.
