I grew up near Poughkeepsie (so no, no way).

Why, by crackey, I, too, grew up near Poughkeepsie...and as a bit of a voyeur, I Love ❤️ watching other people play my bass...specifically the Ric!
It often leads to a l.o.n.g. conversation about how wonderful it is, and how cool I am.

Sometimes, there is beer involved.

It depends upon which one I bring. If it's valuable or pristine, no. If it's an instrument of no particular intrinsic value and in less than perfect condition, and if the player is sober, appears reasonably responsible and reasonably clean, maybe.

Edit: Her indebtedness ≠ my obligation.

Funnily enough, the one place in town where I've seen "bass sharing" happen the most was at those events at the Tranzac.

I think it was one of the community jam events running a while back, where I'm sure I saw a bass shared among 2 or three people there.

I've just had too many bad experiences, myself, many years ago, so I decided to stop sharing.

Yup, the Transzac. I don't think it's really a problem, I just wanted to know how others would feel.

They can bring their own bass and plug into my amp though no problem.

One time Sean Hurley showed up at my gig. You damn well better believe I let him sit in. He played "with a little help fom my friends". Crowd went nuts. Obviously a drunken stranger isn't allowed to sit in, but generally if it's a friend or well-known player, have at it!

I used to let people play. The last time I let someone play, I picked up my bass afterwards and they had put moisturizer on right before and my neck was covered in grease. Never again. Never again.

I've got beater basses that I don't mind bringing. If someone is sloshed I just let whoever's friend they are that they will be responsible for my gear... not the drunk idiot playing my bass.

Since she feels compelled to owe them a favor, I figure she should be compelled to owe me in the event anything bad happens.

I would NEVER own a beater.

How come? I doesn't have to be a junk bass, just one that you have less of an attachment to - and if something happens to it doesn't damage your primary instrument.

I actually only own three basses. My Precision, my StingRay, and my first bass - and old Ibanez Soundgear. The only reason why I haven't donated the Soundgear yet is so that it can be used in exactly these types of situations.
