I'm so glad I found this place, am finding all the info really useful and interesting to read...

Being quite new to the bass, I'd love to start a chat with some of you, but I'm not actually sure what to say without sounding like a complete berk...???

Re-reading my message, and realising I sounded extremely sad...

Can anyone point me in the right direction??

I have played classical, acoustic and electric guitar over the years but am very new to bass.

I have got a few instructional books, am also going to subscribe to a magazine (any pointers to which is the best one?) and have the Iron Maiden bass anthology, from which I have been learning one of my favourites, The Phantom of the Opera.

Any suggestions as to how I should approach learning the bass? Exercises / scales / chords for bass I have not learned at all yet...

I appreciate any advice!

Hi, Suzo- welcome to TB. My advice would be to dig around here a lot; there's a vast wealth of info & experience, and most of it has been discussed already. I'm primarily self-taught so I can't really suggest any specific material. I will say that being self-taught, I can *fake it* up a storm but can't really explain what I do, or communicate properly w/formally trained musicians. For these reasons, I encourage you to learn as much as possible.
