From your description, it sounds as if he was being playfully sarcastic. It may have been some envy over your higher end instruments.
Don't be so thin skinned. You were at the interaction. Was he being playful or was he being a jerk?

A lot of people saying he's just trying to be funny. That may be, but when a guy says something that could be taken wrong by someone they don't really know, it's social ineptitude or worse. In my band, we rip on each other all the time, but we all know it's in fun. None of us would say the things we do to someone we just met.
Who's sensitive? I said: "Fill your boots". I'm okay with people being wrong about me. This ain't my first rodeo.
Why are you over reacting?
-see, this is my point to your defense of said guitarist being an ass. The OP isn't reacting weird at all when someone he doesn't know talk to him like a jerk. It's up to us to all to relate to others if we want to be treated reasonably. You are making my point for me- you could have just let it go, because my humor you might not get, right? Nobody likes to be talked to nasty by strangers. And that's it.
Especially when you are in a room trying to be creative with them....
My issue is with you assuming my "over-reacting". I'm not. I'm sitting here, very calmly, working on my music.
There was no "over-reaction". You're making that up, strawman(ning) an argument which doesn't exist. I could not possibly care less what someone says about me on some forum; except when they mis-represent me, which is what you're doing.

Or you could say as I have with a smile and no smirk 'I play a 6 string bass to over-compensate for the fact that you can't solo worth sheet' and somebody's got to do it LOL!

His statement is one of those situations where "It's not the instance, it's the pattern". (Jerry Jeff Walker said that about him being thrown into the NOLA drunk tank at a young age, but it's true about a lot of things.)
