Not The Best Nut Job

My six string needed a new nut. I know a great setup guy but his shop is not close and he’s busy, so his turn times are a little slow. I figured a nut replacement is a simplish job, so I found someone close by to do the work.

This is what I got back.

Now I have no idea what I’ll say when somebody asks what the string spacing is on this bass!

Guess I’ll be making an appointment with my usual guy after all.

He should definitely be Skjolded .... I mean scolded for doing that!

There's no way I would have let that walk out of my shop. I'm constantly amazed at what some shops think is acceptable to take your money for.

A basic approach is pretty standard by most techs. Install nut. This part alone is critical. You can damage a neck while removing the original. Some instruments are more prone to some things like lacquer checking and finger board delaminating. So you gotta be mindful right from the start. But lets speed up to the install. Its in! Then you put on the 2 out side strings. You space those 4x32’s from the playing edge. At the first fret. This edge is the line in which the roll over begins. And you want to do that measurement at the first fret because nut width is not always equal or consistent as necks are sanded and shaped by hand so each is unique. With all the shaping in that area you get differences. So measure at the first fret. After that you use a spacing ruler. Like this

To space the inner strings. It ain’t rocket science but there is a method to getting it right.

Since it has a zero fret, the main job of the nut is to space the strings. Seriously, you could try and re-cut the low string yourself. It couldn't be worse.

I think I could handle it but I don’t have any nut filing tools. I think the cost of buying them would be comparable to having the job redone.
