Not The Best Nut Job

My six string needed a new nut. I know a great setup guy but his shop is not close and he’s busy, so his turn times are a little slow. I figured a nut replacement is a simplish job, so I found someone close by to do the work.

This is what I got back.

Now I have no idea what I’ll say when somebody asks what the string spacing is on this bass!

Guess I’ll be making an appointment with my usual guy after all.

Looks like your guy nailed five out of six. The E - A derailed him. Wonder if he was cutting slots center-to-center and neglected to take into account string diameter.

You can say it’s a whole lot of spacings or pick the best one.

Pete knew I was having this work done and offered to take a call from whomever I used. I obviously should have taken him up on the offer.

Less obvious is that the nut isn’t cut quite right for the zero fret and a couple of the open strings buzz a little.

Just a complete fail but luckily nothing that can’t be redone. But no, I don’t want Pete to see it either!

that looks like the first nut i ever cut. it was for my own instrument, and I threw it away a minute after I strung the thing up and saw I had messed it up. no way I would have given it to anyone.

Since it has a zero fret, the main job of the nut is to space the strings. Seriously, you could try and re-cut the low string yourself. It couldn't be worse.
