Not to bright roundwounds?

Which roundwounds have subdued treble / hi mids? Have bought Jazz bass with EMG pu's. Bass is very nice but I find emg's a bit too bright/ clanky.
I am not looking for thumpy bass but more low mids /mids.
Recommendations?

Go for Monel (round) cores not hex cores.

alleged to be “the” vintage/purist tone.
Less bright, more warm.

IMHO GHS Bass Boomers will suit your needs.

For an even warmer tone, I highly recommend GHS Pressurewounds.

With 'just incase of Venue' Active capable Bass with 2/3/4 band EQ only if needed [cut not boost]

I have considered the GRBass Pure power Amp from what I am told you can plug bass directly to input no preamp needed it has gain at input and Volume

Yes, all my basses are with 3-4 band preamp. I am thinking of geting GR but would like to check it first and none are close by. Two heads that I'm using now are rather "clean" (Aguilar ag700 is one of them) but pure power is first on my list

Kind of ironic that the guy that helped you out didn't give you advice about strings yet you complain about getting non-string advice...

People are just doing their best to help. Not everything is an attempt to insult you.

Listen, I am not insulted. But first, literary first answer on my "strings" question was " did you try to turn down treble"! If that doesn't sound as troling and shifting post in completely wrong direction.....I dont know what is. And still my answer was completely normal "please stick to the topic".
Secondly , you also are " commenting" logdrum answer without reading it first!
Logdrum answered about strings and answered the question I didnt even know I should ask......namely that BQC preamp has treble response switch.
So why dont you too..... try to stick to the topic

Ummm, read my first reply. I actually did recommend DR Pure Blues and GHS Pressurewounds. But as an EMG user as well as a Bartolini user, which he is used too, I know exactly where he is coming from. I also know he is used to Hi Beams as well . I have met some touring pros who are actually not into gear minutiae as we are here in TB and many leave the string or pickup choice to their techs.

Like Barts pickups are notorious, as their preamps, to bring a signature dark tone, EMG is notorious for its signature treble supercharged tone.

But I know you're the god pro here and I'm only a mere mortal, right...

Have you ever heard about Fender jazz bass with 3 band preamp? And many others.....
I've got a ton of nice tips from a nice people here on talkbass. One of them (logdrum) gave me valuable info and bass now sounds great.
If you don't have anything helpfull to write .......please keep your imaginary problems and "whining" for yourself.

Fender 7250s as supplied on Precisions & Jazz basses? Warm, cheap, last pretty well (low humidity here) and nickel wound so presumably pretty easy on your frets. They’re worth a look in my humble opinion.

You're right, I should have said "gave some non-string advice", not "didn't give you advice about strings". My point is that you went (a bit) off topic to try to be helpful... and it was helpful!

I moved treble response switches to Off, have put new nickel rounds and everything is as it should be......good.

EMGs, being so clean, reveal a lot about strings that you might not learn on a passive bass. With the world of nickel plated, pure nickel and nickel alloy strings being so diverse, you could have a lot of fun trying out different sets. It would be a really long-term experiment (years) but it could still be interesting and fun.

Yeah it would be nice ,always easy solution. Thou, hardware is not realy a problem. Either fix or replace. Depends of how much it makes sense to invest in some particular bass. For me, real problems only exist in neck, trusrod and fretwork. My string action is very low so poor craftmanship is hard, mostly imposible to fix.
Jazz that I just bought came out very well made. Responsive, straight and stable neck, nice fretwork, B string clear all the way up (which Is very rare for them) The only thing was, it needed a bit of "taming" in Hi mids/Low Highs range.
For last 30+ years I'm using almost only DR hi beams. Nickel rounds only on fretless........when I have/use one, so I tried only couple of them.
Hence my thread question.....

I am guessing, because I think in the brightness scale it goes like this Classic, Ceramic Steel, Alnico. That will J, JCS, JA and then they have the X series and it say EMGx and those are a different pickup and I think they are not as scooped plus more headroom - so that will be JX, JCSX, JAX.. And I forget they also have the JV and those have exposed pole pieces. Try the DIP switches and hope it works

By the way, one switch (left) was On and one Off. Now with both Off hi frequencies are still rather prominent, it's EMG after all..... BUT it is nice hi end, sizzling treble and easy manageable. Freq response is pushed out of 1KHz zone which is usually culprit for harsh clangy tone.
Bass is still brighter than any of my "main staple" basses but I expected so much. After all, I bought it because I wanted "single coil Jazz bass" sound and this one is by far best one so far. Believe me, I tried way too many.....
Anyway, your treble response tip saved the day.

Pyramid Pure Nickels (blue packaging) are probably as good as it gets for your needs. I don't think you will find warmer sounding roundwounds than these.

Yes! I get the sweetest grind ever out of these strings (Pbass + Original 62 pickup through a 410 cab).

My pick would be blue label sadowsky. The stainless steel are very good for doing exactly what you were looking for. Otherwise id advise you to take your favorite rounds and play them in and use that. I save old strings because certain basses respond well to having old strings that have mileage in them.

GHS Pressurewounds are nice, but I kind of think of them as their own thing.
