I'm in the process of learning to read, and I think one of the most critical skills you need to have in order to read successfully is what I call Instant Note Recognition. In other words you look at any note on the staff, and you immediately know what that note is with a 100% success rate. This app for your phone really helps. Called NotesDeMusique, it's a Swiss Army Knife full of reading practice aids. I go to the Practice section, bring up the F clef, set the range of notes I want displayed, and it will display a four note measure, with four randomly selected notes. You have to push the right note on the bottom, and it will let you know if you're right or wrong. After using this app for a long time now I can look at a note and know right away what it is. I still have to recognize accidentals, key signatures, and so on, but at least I know that the middle line is a D.
