nothin rong with PUNK bassist

It's also quite easy and predictable to generalize, too, my friend. That's how bigotry was born. As a qualifier, I'd be interested to hear about your background. How long have you been playing? What styles are you versed in? How varied are your influences? Anything you can tell me, really. I just want to know who I'm conversing with.

I am jazz trained. I studied privately with Stanley, Bunny Brunel, and Rick Fierabracci. I've been playing for 25 years, and have the respect of many top music business professionals. I've played on about a dozen master sessions, half of which have reached Gold or Platinum status overseas. I've toured in about 15 different countries, for the last 10 years.

There are good and not so good players in every genre. You have to understand that in many cases, style is a choice.

I make my living as a Pop/ Rock bassist. It's not because I suck, and can't cut the other styles. It's because I love playing that style of music. I play other styles when needed, but that's what I like the best. If Punk moved me, that's what I would play.

There are players in every style that I marvel at. There are Jazzers, that I can't stand, and Punkers that I love.

Please forgive my rant, but the offhanded response to my comments got a little under my skin.

Open your mind, and your playing will follow.

your words have shone me that there are still good people that dont judge at first glance and it seems that its always the seasond veterans that have the right veiw on life and others life choices

i am not just a "punker" i love the bass with a passion that will never die until i die
i have been playing for a little over a year now and have never had a lesson completly self taught
i love to mess around in differnt styles from punk to psycadelic
jazz is great and so is everything else
the reason that i started this thread was because i went to a jazz show a while ago and was critisized because i had a sweater with a misfits patch on it!
i came here because i thought that i could confide to other bass brothern guess i was Wrong after all

Bruce Thomas (the bassist you are thinking of) most definitely was not a punk. He was doing hippie country-rock prior to hooking up with Elvis, I own a couple of his early recordings.

Some other "non-punk" punks would include the Police (all of whom had prog rock credentials!!!) as well as most of the Clash (Mick Jones was a glam rocker and Joe Strummer played in pub rock outfits).

This whole thread is ridiculous. It's perfectly OK to say punk bass is "easy", because IT IS in general. That's the whole point of the style :rolleyes:

Yes, Punk as a style, is easier, but this thread turned offensive with the above post. That is what I railed against. Just because a style is relatively easy, does not change the FACT that there are great musicians who love it and play it.

Look I didn't mean to offend the punk crowd with my comments. It just gets a little old after a while seeing hacks onstage thinking they're top notch musicians (and getting paid?) while there are plenty of real bassists in my and your communities who deserve a real shot who are meanwhile noodling away on their basses some serious s&%#! and have serious statements to make on an electric bass.

That is all I implied with my post. My music collection is so not punk.

Just so you know Mr. Punk Rawk, Good Charlotte isn't punk either. There are plenty of talented punk bassist, hey why not check out the "Punk bassists" threads we have that span 10 plus pages RESPECTING punk bassists.

So there is nothin' rong with PUNK bassists, but this thread is sad.

I am here to say that I was not trying to have people annoyed and/or pissed off with the post that I made

I went on a little tantrum that i should have thought out befor posting I realize that now and I give out my aplogies to any man or woman that i perturbed :(

I am very sorry and wish that we can carry on with what we came here to do
have some fun with our basses :bassist:

It's cool. We stale old TBers can go on the attack rather quickly, don't take it to personal... we just get a kick out of public humilation... sweet sweet humiliation.

The Search link at the top of the thread is how I found those threads. All the bass knowledge you could ever want is archived at the tip of your fingers. Also, I don't know if you are a fan of the punk band "The Minutemen" but their legendary bassist Mike Watt is a member and has his own section in the "Ask a Pro" section. Enjoy.

If someone ever gives you **** about Punkers not being able to play, the Minutemen are a good way to shut them up. Also, Matt Freeman from Rancid/Op Ivy.
