I've been through a lot of dirt pedals and the fifth gear has been earning a board spot for a long time. I use it late in the chain as a dirty boost - it took me a bit to truly appreciate the pedal because I tried to use it how others do: before other dirt, always on. Once I found the right role for it in my setup, it hasn't budged

This is very true. If space was an issue, the FG would be all I needed. But God I love the pork loin. And I have the luxury of fitting both

I only have Hamish's All Things Equal clean boost, which is equally brilliant (pardon the pun). Hesitated on the Fifth Gear because it has no volume control. But one with a volume control might be pretty sweet. Too bad he had to go and let a baby get in the way.
Thanks for asking. I actually got a decent amount PMs about this so Ill just let you all know I'm working on my own record in between sessions and once it is completed Ill definitely share it with the TB community. Sweet pedals, basses and pres will be featured!

Curious to hear your thoughts on the All Things Equal. Is there any subtle tone "enhancement" going on, or is it more transparent?
Very transparent except for the buffering it does. That adds back the treble that gets rolled off with cables and pedals, but other than that, dead transparent. Does not have a whole buttload of boost past unity gain, but it has enough.
Hamish is working a an even smaller ATE. It will be at unity on on channel and an internal trim will control the boost.
I really like what my Barbershop does, but for me its very subtle and doesn't do the grindy OD thing very well.
I'd be curious about stacking it with a 5th Gear for when I want a more aggressive tone. I do notice a bit of compression from the Barbershop, so that should help keep the volume boost from the 5th Gear under control.
Also, thanks for pointing me towards another Canadian pedal maker. Between Southampton, Fairfield, Broughton, and SolidgoldFX, I think I'm fairly well covered.

Sonically how does it compare to the TC Spark Booster? The descriptions male it sound pretty similar!
5th Gear = secret sauce! I use it to drive the tube emulation circuit in my Mesa D800 and to drive my DG VD.

It's hard to go wrong playing with it into anything. It's almost magic like the DOD FX10 is but with added dirty and a little gerth. Magic indeed. I'm serious when I say that if all I needed was OD, I could just run the FG between my bass and amp and be perfectly happy. It's that good. IMO.

Yeah im just a little hesitant on rather I want the 5th Gear or just a clean boost, as I want a boost for the tubes only.
Fifth Gear for sure. My YBA 200-2 loves it. I even did that one practice archived above where all I brought with me for dirt was my dual Fifth Gear.
